Talking with sales at the local Toyota yard:
The new model 70 series vehicles will be released to wholesalers around 23rd March. No specification or promotional material will be available from Toyota until a coupla days prior (There has been some info and a ute pick posted on prior threads on ExploreOz).
There will be a 4 door troop carrier.
The RV specification is being dropped and the std. land cruiser GX / GXL designations to apply.
No indications on pricing are available untill promotional material release.

4 door Troopie could be worth a captain cook for family with 3 wheel chocks destined to be over 6'.

I suspect that the drive train post donk/gbox and the suspension will be similar to the existing models. Does any one have any objective comments on the troopies regarding their abilities as a serious off road vehicle? I am familure with the offroad abilities of stock, slight and heavily modified patrols, land rovers and moderate exposure to the 80 series. I understand some experienced toyota owners are moving from the 100 series to 70 series utes. Does the utes ability transfer to the higher COG troopie?

Paul.

Hi Paul,
The troopies (78 series) share the same options for running gear as the utes (79 series) and generally have the same offroad ability but you are able to keep your stuff dry and relativley dust free providing you keep the rattly rear doors adjusted and the seals looked after. Also carry up to 11 people legally.
They both share the same suspension ie: live axle coil front and rear leaf springs that are longer than the 75 series so the whole truck rides and handles alot better. They don't pitch front to back like the fully leaf sprung 75 series.

Tour Boy, that's a nice looking troopy you have there, cool colour.

Was that colour a special order or was it in the catalogue?

Regards,
Babs.

I read in Mellors Auto News today that the new 70 series will be unveiled and on display at the Brisbane Motor show at end of this week.

The current TD and nat asp Diesel 4.2 litre 6 cylinder engines will be replaced by a 4.2 litre V8 Single Turbo Diesel that puts out 195 Kw and 620 Nm (wow!).

This same engine will be seen in the new 200 series (replacing 100 series) at the end of 2007 in a twin turbo configuration producing 200Kw and something like 650 nm.

Should be a CORKER!

What I want to know (if anyone goes to the Brissie show) is whether the 70 will have 6 stud rims and 17 inch wheels.

Bring it on! On sale around late April early May.

Cheers

I heard around 150kW and 430nm from a 4.5 single turbo CRD V8.

yes, it's a 4.5 ltr single turbo V8 with some reasonable power increase on present 4.2 Ltr, but exceeds all the emission requirements for all European standards and gives better fuel economy than a non turbo 4.2 diesel.

I priced one this week after seeing the write-up in a local paper last Saturday, was told by Toyota will be released late March, maybe know-one really knows till they get here.

To go up extra 5Kw with the extra turbo does not seem worth wile waiting for.

The current troopie only has a high COG if people fit roofracks and put weight up there. The track was widened in 1999 when the 78/79series came out and its improved if you fit wider tyres. The new model should be better again.

But I am sticking to my current 79series. The new V8 offers only small improvements in power and torque over my 1HD-FTE. And the cab and running gear look to be the same, so theres no reason for me to change. But I look on with interest!

I can see that the 76series Troopie will offer something that Toyota has missed for a while............ i.e. a family vehicle with live axle and factory TD motor. But I don't need that any more!

Cheers

I havent read anywhere about a troopy. The 76 series wagon model offered is basically something thats been on sale in Japan for over 10 years.

The real troopy has a raised roof, the 76 series is only the same as a 75 series roof height wise.

I read somewhere the faithfull old 105 series is to be retired also.

Some of us 1HZ lovers will be disapointed to see the faithfull old lump go.
It wasnt too bad in a 75 series power wise and was easy to do home maintenance.

Yeah Ross, they've been quiet about the 78series replacement. Guess we'll find out soon.
