Hi all. Planning to travel from Broome to Cape Leveque soon. What is the latest on the road. I heard it's pretty rough.

Nomads,

Like most roads in that area good one day bad the next.

You can't change it so you have to drive to suite the conditions.

The bottom section is corrugated and sandy the top section is now or should be bitumen from Cape Leveque to Beagle Bay. They were doing road works there last year and should have it finished by now.

I still believe that caravans are not permitted to go to Cape Leveque but camper trailers are OK

Hi,
We were up there in May of 2006. We had a 2003 Patrol 3.0 L td manual. Yes it was rough in most places and very rough in the rest with corrugations all the way. We drove according to the conditions and did the 200 odd kms in about 3.5 hrs. We saw some campertrailers and one or two heavy duty caravans. They had to be ultra cautious.
At the time we did it, it was still cut up from the wet. 4wd was not needed but high clearance was necessary. Beware the maniacs driving hire 4WDs.
Despite the above, it was a fantastic place to visit. We stayed in the log cabins at Kooljaman resort. They have a website. A highlight for us was a flight out over the horizontal waterfall.

Hope this helps,
Jon W

We were up there last May and roads were corrugated but well worth the trip and Wayne is right about caravans, we towed a camper and mate towed a Jayco popup
Make the effort to go to Middle Lagoon, better than Cape Levique, IMHO
Enjoy, Cheers Ray

Nomads,

Click on Places button at the top of the page. Go into Cape/Headlands/Point. From there scroll through until you get to Cape Leveque. There are posts and photos about Cape Leveque.

I also agree with going to Middle Lagoon. Park the camper there and do a day drive up to the Cape.

Agree with most of the above. We went to Cape Leveque and Middle Lagoon last July. The road was quite rough, but take it easy and it is no problem. It gets better the further north you go.

At Cape Leveque, a walk right round the Cape at low tide is well worth the effort. Some great rock formations to see and photograph. It was quite windy when we were at the Cape. Dinner in the 'restaurant' is pleasant (though at $25 for a simple roast, a bit more expensive than you might be used to). The highlight of dinner was afterwards when the cook and dish washer came out with guitar and didgeridoo and put on a great show. Made it all well worth while.

Middle Lagoon in a beautiful spot to relax for a couple of days. Great whiting fishing from the beach and some good mud crabs in the creek at the south end of the beach. It is certainly possible to stay at Middle Lagoon and do Cape Leveque as a day trip.

A drive to a couple of the aboriginal settlements is worth while we thought. At One Arm Point we had a great visit to the Hatchery where a delightful young aboriginal girl gave us a tour and talk on what they are trying to achieve.

Lombadina is a delightful settlement with very friendly people. Gary is the baker on Mon, Wed and Fri (when bakery is open) and makes great jewellery from shells on the other days. We spent some time watching him work in his workshop. We later met Gary's brother Phil at the Horizontal Waterfalls where he was working as a guide. Third brother (Robert) was home running the family fishing charter boat. We found this to be typical of the Lombadina community. A clean, friendly hard working place; a pleasure to visit.

Beagle Bay is worth a visit to see the church; it really is beautiful. But otherwise, we didn't find Beagle Bay as pleasant a place as some of the other communities. There is a back road from Middle Lagoon to Beagle Bay. Ask for directions at the Middle Lagoon office.

I know you only asked about the road, but hope some of this further info helps.

In June 06 the 1st 84k's was horrendous. Corrugations you could lose a mini minor in. 2 hrs to do the 84k's rest was typical Kimberley corrugations. Blew the whole time we were there and the last night it blew a gale. Good thing was it blew all the corrugations flat and was able to drive out at 80km/hr. Make sure you book for Kooljiman as they don't like you just rocking up and you can be turned away. Try and get a powered site in the lee of the dune as camping on the edge of the cliff can be very rough due to the possible winds. Oh Yer no fish in June.

Hey Dunc, the reason you didn't get any fish in June 06 is because we were there in May 06 and caught heaps. sorry mate
