Hi there, I own a 79 series landcruiser, and last weekend was driving up a long
hill in top gear where the temp started to creep up. Temp outside was around the 33 deg mark with aircond on.didnt go to 3/4 of gage, but moved up regardless. when the road platued the temp when straight back to normal. Any one can help me with any technical Advice.? P.S on iddle for extended peiod of same day the temp never moved.Just on that one
hill.
Regards Chris

Chris,
It would have to be over fuelling. Too much fuel not being burnt and the temp will rise. Going back a gear will increase the revs and burn more fuel but not necessary use more fuel.
It is the amount of unburnt fuel going through the motor that causes it to get hot and to cool once the over fuel supply has been reduced.
This is my theory, others might have the right answer.

Chris,
If it was the fan i would think that it would happen more often. It would not hurt to refill /replace the oil in the fan hub.
The reason for my theory is in the
Vic high Country in the middle of summer going up Billy Goat Track in low range the old Troopie never got hot. Going up Lapstone
hill, on the Great Western Highway, near home in a high gear(4th) and the temp would rise. Go back a gear and not go over 2500rpm and the motor stays cool.
Let me know if changing the oil in the fan hub helps and I will change it in the old Troopie before I sell it.

Chris, what engine and what year model is your vehicle, and does it have an aftermarket turbo?

Chris, Its unusual for that to happen on a stock standard 79series 1Hz under the conditions you describe. My money is on the radiator getting a bit clogged - particularly if you have been using different coolants that can precipitate. The viscous couplings don't usually become a problem until the vehicle is older than yours, which I'm guessing would be a 2000/2001 model.

icecold,
I was lead to believe that if the fan is hard to spin with the motor stopped that it was ok. Try to give it a spin by hand and if it keeps spinning or does not stop straight away then replace the goo. IMHO.
Cheers,
Bros.

Ok the motor is a HZJ 4.2 deisel same as the 75 series motor.
the fan i did spin, but did have little resistance and did spin a little further after i let go. and no there is no turbo. Although i have been given a Quote for a new Turbo Kit. $3000.00 includes the full kit, 3 inch pipes right through, fitting and tuning included. Id say that is a good deal.

The viscous coupling fluid can be got from Toyota for around $12 a tube, you'll need two tubes.

mmm testing a cold fan is of little value
mine has considerable resistance when cold and certainly wont keep spinning when spun by hand. Next time you are working it and it starts running warm pull over and pop the bonnet then raching through the front door (or with a mate even easier) turn it off the fan should do no more than 1 rotation beore sopping. My 80 when I did this spun for about 15 seconds!!
Usual suspects are
- blocked radiator (internal) in which case get it rodded - if it needs replacing use the brass
tank relacements (not much more)
- external blockage. Check the front of the rdiator and if it is fine reove the bar (only a few bolts) that holds the lower bonnet catch. this willallow you to see between the 2 radiators as crap gets sucked up between them (best to remove th rad to fix this blockage)
- fan, been mentiond

Chris
Wayne above has it one - overfueling.
Only answer is to drop it back a cog and another one if necessary.
If you had a EGT guage you would be able to see why and how quick it happens.

Much slower ;-)) probably no problem as the lower gears will keep the engine revving harder.
