I'm organising a trip to
the Painted Desert in July and one of the people coming along wants to drive/
camp in Chambers Gorge in the Flinders.
Some reports I have found say only the first 8kms is accesible, some reports seem to indicate others have driven much further.
Does anyone know the current status and if you've been there can you recommend a good spot to
camp for a small group of vehicles (possibly with CT)

you'll find somewhere to
camp w/o any probs. I can't remember how many km's in you can go but I would suggest
camping as far in as you can go befoe the river xing.. We tried to see how far in we could before we had to turn around. From memory we couldn't go much further than the river xing.

Nice spot to
camp. No problems with the camper trailers. Yep, they closed off the middle of
the gorge because of damage - its a nice walk down
the gorge. Plenty of wallabies and there was a lot of Sturts Pea last time we were there. And its a comfortable first days drive from
Adelaide.

Pat,
It is about 9klm to the first big
camp site.
If you cross the
creek and keep heading into
the gorge the track will pass other smaller
camp sites. The track will be blocked by rocks and a
sign.
Park your vehicles there nd walk into
the gorge. the track will veer left where there are info boards set up. Have a read and then proceed down the dry
creek bed. You will soon see on the left, rock
engravings. The further you go in the more there are.
Camper trailers are fine, but it might be an ides to take some fire wood in with you.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be taking plenty of firewood, it'll be cold in july up there.
