I am looking at buying a Magellan xl or a gpsmap76csx. These units are probably as good as each other but are the mapsend and mapsource maps the same detail or is one better than the other? Mapsource Oztopo is cheaper, is it as good as Discover Australia? And has anyone used the free version of Tracks4Australia as far as I can work out it is Oztopo without contour lines, is this right. Any help appreciated.

I have a Garmin Etrex Legend CX that I have loaded the free version of Tracks4Australia plus Contours Australia. These maps are ok they show the main roads around town but not the minor roads. The only complaint I have with T4A is that some of the roads are inaccurate ie driving along a road beside a railway line & T4A shows me drivng down the railway line. I have thought about upgrading to T4A Pro but they use the same maps so will be just as inaccurate.
Contours can be downloaded free from Site Link

I think everyone will have a different opinion on what is the best option. For me the XL is just what I wanted being portable and covering 'most' tracks in Australia with Mapsend. In some cases it even has walking tracks (although not around katherine). I am not interested in the city so I can't really comment other than I suspect being a bigger market there are better maps/products although Mapsend is fine other than having someone telling you where to go!!! I have the maps on the SD card so a PC is essential otherwise organising your trips can be pretty tedious. I am very happy with the XL.
Cheers

I have T4A and its great, mind you CityNavigator whas many of the tracks on it also, and is a great city product too.

I found the Garmin a little more intuitive than the Magellan, I have used both and prefer the Garmin, I have a 60CS but smaller than the 76 with the same screen size.

Thanks for the replies. I am more interested in outback roads, tracks and fishing creeks and esteries. I believe T4A is more suited to outback but no good if its not accurate. Has T4A got creeks and esteries or do I need a marine chart? Has anyone used mapsource oztopo?
