I am looking at running a weekend trip for my Club in the Avoca/Pyrenees/Mt Cole area and as I have never been there I would like to know good
places to
camp and some good (interesting/harder) tracks to drive. Anybody been up that way lately?

Waterfalls
camp is good for tents but not so good for camper trailers, limited sites. It has a drop loo
I had fun on Gollups and Sardine tracks, there are many more which are much harder though.

Just watch out for the fire up that way at the moment South West of Elmhurst. Site Link There is a good camping spot at Glen Patrick, North East of Elmhurst. Good clear area but you would need to take water for the
toilets I would imagine at the moment.
From Glen Patrick there are some nice tracks up around the top of the ranges but really have difficulty without checking all my maps. Will be going back there before too long. The tracks are generally shorter than a lot round the High Country but offer good variety. A real bonus is that you cna buy some teriffic local wines for your dinner after the hard work
Fraser Track over the NE of the range is a bit of a challenge to the inexperienced. Some others can be quite steep. Have heard Gollop Track can be confronting too. Have a look at www.dse.vic.gov.au/.../0/B03C962DB2138FC1CA25715D0024FB35/ $File/FS0036+-+Pyrenees+State+forest.pdf - for a brochure with maps

Sorry the link above has to be pasted. Have stayed at Waterfalls
Picnic area, There is Camerons
Campground up the top of the range. Having had a look at the maps have don't quite a few, Old
Bluff track I think was a fairly stony one and character forming. Plenty of nice ones, one we came out of was right up the Landsborough Road area so went right along the ridge. Much drier that way against the central area of the range. Really lovely forest. I know one guy who used to go over the top with a F100 2by with a 200 litre drum of water on the tail
gate for traction :-))))

Thanks, that's given me a start. I might go up for a day to do a quick recce. Don't mind the fact that there will be a few wineries in the area either.
