Thats it after 2 nights of reading posts for lokkas, air lokkas, detroits, lockrights blah blah.
I`m gonna get the auto lokka for the front (Hilux solid axle),
But which one the yankee made lockright or aussie lokka FROM 4WDSYSTEMS ?
I don`t need stories on air lockers.
Just the difference between the these auto lokkas.
I`ll chuck an auto lokka in and if I`m not happy I`ll chuck it out and sell it for whatever it goes for, Simple.

mate I think they may be the same unit just rebadged. I had a rear lokka from 4wdsystems in SA, was happy with the unit, even more happy with their service and price tags (they have cheap snorkels) and all was
well. Also you would be buying aussie. in the end i cant see you being upset either way.

The lockright is $800 and the lokka is $500 that is what makes me think their different , and maybe the lockright is better quality for the xtra price ?
But then again alot of people seem happy with the lokka and $300 better off.
looks like the way to go.

I would like to see them side by side, i think the $300 is margin for the company selling at that price. i think they have a warranty and I had 0 problems with
mine, I even put it in myself and tested it lots of times because I was so worried I would get the tolerances wrong, but in the end it never faulted. I am now thinking about the front diff of my new 4x4 cause they dont make a rear which I would prefer.

Apparently they are different. Once called them upo and asked and they are completely different, but that could have just been a sales pitch

Can you put them in front and rear together?
Is the front diff on an IFS Hilux strong enough for these types of diff locks?

putting a lokka or lockrite in the front diff will actualy make the diff stronger so i was told by my diff guy so instead of breaking the diff it will be the next weakist link the imput shafts i think

Me thinks Eric that your comment "get the detroit" is based upon a little experience or observation.
Any particular reason you would like to add if you don't mind expanding on the statement?

Eric,
the reason I have deciding to get one for the front is because this dry season we are planning to travel the cape and the OTL track.
Do you think it would be handy for the OTL track.
cheers.

2nd that. Did the OT a few years ago now.
Good set of AT tyres was all I did, and some careful driving picking the right lines.
Didn't get bogged once.
And a friend along just in case with a snatch strap. Never used it.
I always got sent through first too, since it was reasoned if a pajero can make it, the patrols and LCs wouldn't have any problem. Not commenting any more.

I have a lokka from 4WDsystems in the front of my Toyo 60 series and I have been very happy with it. I think it is important to make sure it is installed properly and not to try to do it yourself(as the literature seems to suggest you can do easily) - unless of course you are knowledgeable and experienced in working with diffs. However, I seem to recall posts a few years ago that suggested there had been "funny business" re ownership/rights to this design which had a bearing on the price difference between types. Someone with a longer memory than
mine might be able to give more info on this. I have a feeling that there was a court case, so you might need to watch just how this gets discussed.

Basil
Installed a Lokka in the 75 series from 4wd systems 3 years ago and no problems. Had it done by a differntial mob in Myaree tho just to make sure it was installed correctly.
Money
well spent.

From what I understand, the Lokka is a copy of the Lockright. I've also read that the Lockright is a better product and made of better quality metals. That's not to say that the Lokka is crap, just not as good. I guess that's why there is a price difference. As the LSD is
well shagged in my 80 series, I'm looking at fitting a Lockright in the future.

Thanks emo,
Thats the answer I got from a bloke at TJM, he said they are a copy of the lockright and work just as good. But he also says that they have slightly softer springs or somthing of that nature. So it protects any possible breakages to axles or the unit itself. So if anything
the springs would need changing at the worst.
cheers

I read somewhere, maybe a previous thread, that they can be clunky and noisy. Anyone have a comment about this?
As they work differently than the air lockers, do they put more or less strain on the diffs, axles and CV joints than the air locker?

I have a Lockright in the front of our 80 series and no, it is not clunky or noisy but it does make the steering a bit different on corners till you get used to it. it works really
well. I heard the Lokkarite was a cheaper copy but they still seem to do the job. I'd still buy a Lockright though just to be safe.

ive only had my lokka in for 3 months its in the front i had it installed by a good diff guy who put good thick diff oil in it and on the rare occation i have it engaged on firm surfaces there is a small clunk as the faster wheel disengages. The way i see it there would be less pressure on cvs and such because when turning it allows one wheel to go faster instead of both wheels fighting eachother
