I know this is a little off tropic, ok topic, but a mate is heading off to the great blue yonder for his sea change. I am wondering what are the best internet options available for the traveller, apart from internet cafe's.

Ferris,

Check with Telstra, they have a card that plugs into the lap top and picks up a CDMA signal."$X" amount for the card and then works on a pre paid plan like a mobile phone.

Used one at White Cliffs last year.

Laura,

I am not sure what a crack chassis has to do with this post but to answer you question.

It was the rear diff housing that I had problems with and fix it by replacing the diff housing in Alice Springs.

I hope this clears things up.

Not many Internet Cafe's available at sea:-)

Wirless modem cards available if he's within CDMA or NextG range, otherwise a link via a Satphone, depending on how great the "blue yonder" is.

Look out with the CDMA card - card "modem" up front is 3 or 4 hundrerd. And the plans are not that great cost wise, but liveable - however, the big put off is that like the analogue network - CDMA will cease at the end of 07. However, at this stage, it is really the only option to go for.
Dont know if 3G phones can be hooked up to the laptop and used as a data call though - I would presume they can be, anyone else assist with that?
Cheers

Yes, you can use the 3g phone to access the web from the laptop.

Tricky's had the CDMA card on special during Jan for $99

Just rememer the power output of a mobile phone is much lower than an actual modem. (ie poorer signal)

If you can put up with the price - nextg.

Been using the USB nextg device on the super fast 1G plan, works well whenever there is 1 or more bars on a cdma phone. VOIP works - but there is a delay of 1/2 second.

\It's good for looking up sat/roads on maps.google.com

I needed the net for work (and play) whilst traveling.
Went with the Bigpond NextG Modem and for $49.95 a month I get 1Gig and coverage almost anywhere. ... not cheap but it works very well indeed (using it now, out bush).
If you go for the "card" option, you only get 200 megs a month for your $50- and a Gig costs $80.... ie: the Modem is a much better deal.
Also if you don't have others in the family at home who download movies etc (like I have) this would be the only internet access I'd need. For now I need ADSL at home too- that's another $50 pm!! Bugger!
Cheers

Depends on what you are going to use internet for too. Using anybody elses computer, in cafe library etc. for banking would be a heck of a risk. Or accessing anything else important to you that requires a password. Every keystroke you make on those computers can be tracked and saved and used by someone else after you have moved on.
Plugging your own laptop computer into somebody elses phone line is safer, but you need the right type of phone connection and modem in your 'puter. And have arranged it all with your internet supplier, and know their local-call-number to connect cheaply where you are. Some caravan park operators will allow you to plug into their phone line for a short period.
Next G from your own laptop computer seems the most practical at this point in time. If you have long pockets. 'Course don't get any internet or phone services in the real outback, no matter what you are using..
