Can anyone help?
I have a '92 pajero which i had trouble on fraser island recently. I was having trouble getting around until someone alerted me to the fact that my front wheels wern't driving. Thankfully a fellow 4wdriver helped me get going by manually engaging hubs by disconnecting vacuum hoses & bypassing solenoids.

I originally thought the solenoid was faulty but after consulting a manual and doing some tests found solenod o.k. but getting no 12v supply. Started to check sensors on transmission but in the process found that when i changed from 2h to 4h
there was slippage in the transmission & if i went into 4l i achieved full drive however no front hubs, & when changing back to 2h some grinding of gears was evident. I forgot to mention I have auto transmission.

It is my assumption at this point that because 4wd isnt engaging properly, it is not operating the 2wd/4wd switch in turn not supplying 12v to the solenoids.

Has anyone else had this problem or can assist with possible prognosis?
Could it be as simple as gear shift adjustment or do I have a bigger problem?

Any assistance would be greatful.

hi Kev
I do not claim to know the Pajero systems, but most of the problems I have found with the toyota range that have similar problems i.e. prado and ssurf the trouble has usually benn a faulty earth. these can be a bit hard to find some times as it may also be the earth line in a multiplug.
Also check that the switches are actually doing what they are supposed to.
It may help if you can jack it up to get 4 wheels off the ground so that you can drive it and see what is happening. ( good axle stands or large blocks of wood under the axles ) make sure it is safe.
Some brands need to be in park and some in neutral to range shift, I do not know if this applies to pajeros
Hope this is of help.

Yes, this is a problem on the older super select Gen II pajeros (1990 - 2000).

It can be the sensors in the transfer case failing either mechanically/electronically.

Have heard that the sensors can get oil in the contacts, since they are actuated by a ball in the base of the sensor. The switch itself can fail, and as you have discovered, the vacumn system can also play up for engaging the front drive shafts.

There has been a fair bit of discussion on the Victorian pajero owners club's forum, with fixes.

Another source of information is the UK pajero owners club. (It has a good FAQ and technical section.)

Both of these clubs allow you to participate on the forum by registering, even if you are not a member, as does this forum.

guarantee on the sensors.... just a matter of working out which 1 they range from about $50 to $90.
expensive to replace all, but difficult to diagnose, even with mitsu computer.
we normally keep all in stk and change each until we find the faulty 1

Thanks for the response.
I would be happy if it were one of the sensors, however can a crook sensor cause the problem with drive slipping in 2h?
