This is THE vehicle I have been waiting for. Ugly as sin but just what Australia so badly needs.

I think this close to the perfect factory 4x4. I wonder if it will come with factory fitted diff locks and dual tanks? Also hope they put the H151 box in it (or maybe a super-duty 6 speed auto!) What else will compete with it?

I predict there will be year long waiting lists for these. Toyota will make an absolute bundle off them.

I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, I want, vI want, I want, I want, I want,

Probably not much uglier than a 100 series or a Nissan.

Should be an interesting year sales wise in the 4wd market, me thinks Nissan may cop a hiding this year....3 litre 4 cylinder Vs 4.5 litre V8 TD.

151kw/430 Nm out of a common rail diesel that first appears in 2007 is disgusting. it's only 21kw and 30Nm more than the 2.5L nissan engine!!!! hopefully these numbers are wrong

Pajero, that's why it's so good. REAL torque from cubic inches and reliability from understressed design. I dare say you could turn it into a tyre fryer without too much effort if that's what floats your boat.

I wonder which vehicle will be seen out in the bush for that very reason.

Even if it turns out to be a dog, the V8 sound will make you smile every time you boot it rather than sounding like a Coates 10Kva gen set.

the reason the torque curve is so flat is because the engine is electronically limited, i know so the updated models can have more power than the current ones, so they can sell more. They will use reliability as the reason behind it, but it is more of a marketing strategy. Rather than do what BMW and Audi do and give customers the latest technology, knowing they can come up with something better in the process. A 3L diesel these days does not struggle with 500Nm, it seems a shame that this V8 diesel is 70Nm short of the 3 litres! If it was the same or even slightly more it would be good. 190kw/600Nm would be so much better. What's the famous saying? Most people look at things that are and ask why? I look at things that never were and say WHY NOT? Toyota? maybe the 200 series will be the go! For some people, no matter what Toyota bring out, they will call it awesome. Some people have already labelled it awesome and reliable, and it hasnt even been tested!!! Time will tell. I am disappointed it doesnt have more grunt for a new v8 diesel. Tell me its not a sports car if you wish, but neither is a 260kw F250 that pulls gooseneck trailers, or a 200kw/650Nm 3.6L V8 Range Rover

PajeroTD, toyota are not leaders in the market place in terms of doing new and interesting things, I think most people would agree that far, but they do sell a lot of cars and anything they do turns to gold - even the avalon sold here! This model is ugly but toyota can see that the LR defender has not changed and poeple like it a lot. So they wanted to keep the rugged reputation but also update the model. You also might say they have not done much with common rail, well they are 10 years behind the game but you have to give them breathing space for finally giving it ago, nissan dont have CRD in the patrol yet. As for capacity vs power, well that is a long argument which prooves inself when you eat that pudding, if its true that thrashbox small CRD's dont last, we will know in around 5 years from now, obviously in that case we can all agree that toyota engines are not competitive in the power stakes (they never really have been, neither do they give good consumption) but you cant fault reliabilty, they are as good or better than most leading brand of engine makers. If it turns out that small high output diesels dont last, then toyota will win out and prove once again that they are reliable. Although they will never be an exciting car, they know their market, and their market says they want lots of CI and low power output because the market says this is more reliable, therfore toyota deliver. This is where they are geniuses, people are conservitave when spending 50k, and toyota deliver time and time again in delivering conservitave, outdated reliable cars. One day toyota will be the worlds largest car maker while GM and ford keep pumping out low cost high powered S#@T.

F4, what it's like is having a Yamaha home theater system which puts out 200w per channel through 7.1 channels, and limiting it to 30 watts through 2 channels. And then saying IT HAS PEAK POWER at volume 5 so it lasts forever!!!

PajTD - It doesnt have 'peak' power, it has very fat linear power. Just what is required for a big 4WD that is at home in the bush and pulling big loads. The way power/torque is delivered makes a huge difference.

Quite frankly Tojo have been doing this for a while and killing the competition in sales with their smaller high tech (more stressed/unreliable) engines. The formula works.

Hey pajerotd, even as Mitsu owners, we should be complaining.
3.2l ITD and what power? About 130kw/350nm if we are lucky, and only going common rail on the latest model this year.
Have a friend with a VW golf 2l diesel, and another with a pugeot 2l, and a third with a new range rover sport TDV6. All very different cars/engines to our pajeros/toyotas/nissans. All built in Europe.
When are you going to up your power to 200kw, only needs a rechip and a decent exhaust?

yeah fair point Oldplodder. I dont mind the look of the car, it looks tough, no doubt about it. But just that bit more power would be nice for the on-road stuff, and towing. I would just want a V8 diesel to have more power and especially torque, than a small V6 diesel. If this 4.5L V8 had the same power and torque per litre as the new Passat 125kw/350Nm 2.0 diesel, it would have 281kw and 787Nm!!!! I WOULD NOT expect Toyota to release that much power and torque in the 70 series, and I AM NOT saying they should. But surely we can see how 151kw/430Nm looks way disappointing in comparison to what COULD be achieved. Thats why i think 180-200kw/600Nm would not be pushing it in that engine at all. I actually believe that engine as it is, does produce that power and torque anyway, they have just limited it's output, which is evident by the torque output figure being straight from 1200rpm, obviously it would reach around the 600Nm@2000rpm, it has just been restricted. Means you have to spend an extra $1000 on unrestricting it.
I believe Toyota has developed this engine to be used for the next 20 yrs, and is starting with low figures so it can be updated every 2 or 3 yrs without too much costs in development.

guys I have come to a conclusion through all this that we have all been had. The car companies are giants, they do so much research on what we want they just deliver on opinion polls. Some companies innovate and try to convince us of the positives of their innovation, but toyota is a opinion poll company. The very fact we discuss engines in different makes means we probably dont undertsand the extent of how this works. To put it another way, we dont want LC's with 2.2 diesels, we want "reliable" 4.0L therefore toyota sell us reliable 4.0L cars. Its easy for them, they dont have to innovate, they wait till the hard work is done, then 10 years later come in easy, never putting a foot wrong and selling up a storm, this technique is safe, easy and works. Its marketing, marketing, marketing. We are consumers with demands that are easily met, we assume a large car should use 15L per 100, and they do, meanwhile putting no comsumer pressure for them to do better. In the end, its the consumers like us who should demand 6L per 100km from large powerful cars. Can it be done - yes, will it happen - no, we dont expect these guys to try hard. Instead of real innovation in engines, electric power etc,, we get cd stackers, electric rain sensing wipers, bluetooth and electrical crap desigend to take our minds on the real issue, economy and environment technology. Its all bull crap, we are sold bull crap and worst of all most of the time we eat bull crap no quesitons.

Well that may be true, probably is, but the fact of the matter is I can take my Toyota anywhere and feel comfortable it'll keep working and get me home again - everytime.

Reliability is THE issue. That's why consumers pay a premium for the Toyota badge.

The D3 Landrover may be better on all counts, but word of mouth, magazine articles and experience with the old ones would make me very nervous going anywhere on my own in one of them.

Sales will tell the story anyway.

'Better' is not necessarily better. (and you can quote me on that).

The 200 series is coming out with the twin turbo V8 Diesel. 200kw / 650lb torque.

How much power do you need.
We all now Toyota's are the best. There is no argument there.

what part of the diesel engine have Toyota innovated?

The diesel engine? No
Common Rail? No
The turbo-charger? No

Are they trying to get raw power from their "beefy" engines without pushing it? No
Otherwise why would they require twin turbo chargers on an engine that other manufacturers get 260kw/750Nm out of? Will I HATE the 200 series? I am sensible enough to wait till its out, and drive it before making an opinion on the sound the engine makes, how much grunt you will feel, how good it is off-road. But die-hard Toyota fans, already seem to know this engine sounds awesome, is awesome to drive, is the best off-road, and lasts forever. Oh and the other dumb myth.... the spare parts for this engine are really cheap and available at thousands of Toyota dealers all across the Simpson Desert.

Got some valid points there PajTD.

The reason behind the twin turbo's is apparently to smooth out the power delivery and negate turbo lag. They are not the same size and do not perform the same.

I took those photos of the maroon ute and they are from the Brissy motor show. Interesting to see they are all over the net in a few days. Even as far as the South African Cruiser forum! The switch you ask about on the extreme right side of the dash beside the vent says "Idle up"... I suspect it replaces the hand throttle as the CRD engine is probably fly-by-wire and doesn't have a throttle cable to pull on...

The current TD has fly-by-wire and also a conventional hand-throttle. I'd guess that Toyota have made it easier to use by just having a press button idle-up.

The New 78 & 79 appear to be the same as the current model from the firewall back.
They appear to have widened the side guards up front to better handle the V8 so we assume. Otherwise same track and dimensions etc.

Hey all,

I hate to say it but this looks like it could be one very cool vehicle. Bugger I bought this car as a long termer! Have to get the wife enthused all over again.

As was said before, as long as it gets the H151 Gearbox/stronger transfer (or better) with optional front/rear diff locks and long range tanks, I reckon it could be a popular choice for a LOT of people around OZ (and elsewhere).

Hopefully any bugs that appear will be 'ironed out' by the time I'm allowed to start looking for one, should be able to improve on factory power and torque figures quite easily (front mount or water to air, 3in and chip), and away you go.

Watching all theses threads with interest,

Ross.

Offtrack, its just maths. Diff locks may cost Toyota a couple of hundred dollars on the assembly line, but they charge you $2500 for the difflocks. They are still cheaper than aftermarket, and there are no warranty issues with factory difflocks.

And not many customers want difflocks - if they accidentally get engaged, things go crunch.
