Hi All

I'm getting near to retire and am looking at doing the ultimate trip ..tour Oz.

But what is better for towing a reasonable size van a V8 or TD6.
I know the TD will be better on fuel consumption but will it pull better than an 8.
I'm leaning towards a TD but the prices of second hand discovery's are unreal.

I would love to hear readers opinions.

Thanks for reading this
Regards
Peter

OK, in my heart, Iwould go the V8, or large 6.
Less possible hassles etc.

But I do have a friend with range rover sport TDV6, and he swears it is magic towing his 2.6t (well 2.9t ATM) van.!!
Got about 11 to 12l/100k coming down the highway from Brisy sitting on a steady 90 to 100k.
Auto levelling rear, all the good gear, car knows when van is on the rear and ABS adjusts itself. Rest is too long to list here.

Thanks for your reply.
It seems as though everyone confirms my thoughts on Discos ...stay away from them.
OK thanks for the info... its a td6 GXL100 for the trip.

As they say "keep the shiny side up"

I have to agree with you that v8 are more thirsty but I wanted to see what fuel consumption they were getting and most of the posts have answered my question.
The fuel consumption is lousey to say the least.

Peter Hi ,
I am a little confused, its been a long day. Their are two td6 on the market, Landcruiser and patrol. The cruiser in particular is a brilliant tow vehicle but very pricey 2nd hand, the patrol is about $10000.00 cheaper and a lot of people swear by them.
My experience with Discoverys is that they are now very hard to sell 2nd hand, and except among rover diehards have lost t
their reputation. I am wondering if you confused Discovery with Landcruiser
The cruiser TD pulls like a train, But my mate pulls three horses with the v8 petrol I guess you will have to test drive all of the above and buy what suits you
Cheers Pete

Stay away from landies...b4 u buy a diesel, go stand in the pool left at the bowser and pick up the bowser and get it on you....
Short answer, with van, diesel will go from 13-16l/100, v8 will go from 18-25....same with sand

Dont you know the only reason you get gloves and boots from work is to fill up your vehicle ?

( ok I'm fibbing , the boots are for pouring cement ! )

Discos = trouble. Contact people in Birdsville about how many unsalvagable wrecks are out there...

Go for a Nissan or Toyota, as things like spares are FAR mor accessable off the beaten track, than fishing around for the latest bit of electrowizardry that causes the Disco to stop dead in its tracks in the middle of nowhere.

Hi Peter.

I have a 100 series TD6. Towing a 20 foot boat (roughly 2 tons or more)
Fuel is about 19l/100km average on a 6 hour trip.

Plenty of power.

I have owned a few Toyota's, like it was said before parts are a lot easier to come buy anywhere. As every cattle station have several Toyota, so most town have a fair supply of parts. Not that you will need may parts Toyota's don't break down to often.

Cheers
Rob

Hello Peter
As a past Disco owner (Tdi and Td5) I wouldn't recommend them to anyone.
Very expensive for parts and depreciation value will leave you spitting chips
(I was offerd $17000 for my 3yr old Td5 - I walked away in disgust)
I've owned a 100 series L/cruiser TD (auto) for past 2yrs and can highly recommend them for whatever towing or tripping you want to do.
Cheers

Well if a former Diso owner can't say a good word about them then they must be not very good. Beats me how they can get 4WD of the year!

looks as though I will go for a TD6.

Depends on your budget ...
Go for a TD8 .. more power, more torque, more fun ...
good luck
