Hi all,

Ive just bought my Coleman Dual Fuel stove.
Which is the best Unleaded Fuel to use (cleanest etc.)

Are the higher octane fuels better.
Is any particular brand (eg BP, Gull, Shell) cleaner?

Cheers,

Gav

If it will use Shellite (sometimes called "white petrol" or dry-cleaning fluid), that will be the cleanest and probably the safest. I bought a little stove that uses Shellite in 1961 and I still use it for trips and sometimes at home. But Shellite is a bit over twice the price of ordinary unleaded, or more than 4 times as dear if you get it from Bunnings!

Coleman fuel ($15 for 4 litres), and Shellite are the best.
ULP is OK. Don't know that theres any difference between ULPs with stoves. If so, it wouldn't be much.

for everything you ever wanted to know about fuel stoves... www.bushwalking.org.au/FAQ/FAQ_Stoves.htm

I can't answer your question exactly, but I believe its a good idea to use shellite/coleman fuel every now and then

I use shellite, and if you buy it in bulk from diggers direct it is less than ulp.

I only use Shellite in both of my Coleman stoves but it's good to know the option to use ULP is there.

I paid $42 for a 20lt drum of Shellite from the local Shell depot last November, seems to go up and down with the price of petrol.

Don't waste your money on shellite or coleman fuel. Any ulp will do the job. Just carry a spare pump.

I agree just use unleaded petrol . Never had a problem yet and if I do just wack in a new generator. Far cheaper than the expense of the shellite over time.

Gday
have used the coleman duel fuel cookers and lights for 20 years and i think the coleman fuel or shellite are best.
Yes unleaded petrol is cheaper but i have found that the generator can cause more problems with unleadeed, but it is a good standby.
Lets face it , even on a extended trip the amount of shellite cost you would use in relation to the overall cost in negligable.
all the best

I would only use unleaded and not Shellite. It is vastly more expensive for no added benefit. It is a good idea to carry a spare (about $14) no matter what fuel you use. I have used our duel fuel stove on extended camping trips over the last 8 years, used unleaded and used 1 generator in that time. Even if the generator does require replacing more often using unleaded it is still cost-effective to use unleaded. It is also possible to give the generator a bit of a scrub-up if it gets blocked.
