Agggggggggggggggggggh
Why is it a four wheel drive vehicle is called a truck?
makes me cringe when someone says " nice truck "
yes truck is a general term but....as a truck driver.....i think its silly.
Is it a term from usa?
Just an annoying idiosyncrasy i guess.

Well.....mine sounds like a truck and drives like a truck, therefore I call it the truck! Just got to get me some exhaust brakes and some of that fancy pin-stripping and I'm lookn' for a convoy!

Moggs I have solved that conundrum, I make the exhaust brake noises myself as I slow down, even moderating as I push harder on and off tthe brakes. Very effective and costs virtually nothing excepot some kleenex for the INSIDE of the window.

hahahaha, me too Gramps......

Mine's got a 6.5 Chev V8 and sounds more like a truck than a lot of the modern day prime movers about the place.

It's certainly not a "CAR", so what would the politically-correct brigade ask us to use as a term? Perhaps we could import another US term of recent origin....."SUV"???? ............. NO THANKS>...........!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So long as I paid me money, I'll call me truck a "TRUCK" and too bad if anybody doesn't like it.

BTW, some of my best mates a long-haul truckies.....I have the utmost respect for them all; having to put up with all the car and wanna-bee truck drivers (like me).... hahahahaha

Keep the shiny side up mate.............

Cheers

BTW, where would you have us all draw the line? EG: is a F250 with a 7.3L donk a truck? No?
Okay, maybe a Mazda 3500 with pantech box? No?
Okay, what about an OKA? No?
Okay, what about a Unimog? No?
Exactly how big/tough/many axles/many wheels/much horsepower etc does a vehicle have to have before it stops being a car and becomes a truck.??

To answer my own question (above) about where to draw the line.......
There is no way I can consider (in my own mind), calling some of the "softer" 4x4s, a truck. EG, Pajero, Prado, Exploder, Territory, LoLux, Navara etc.

In my mind it needs to (preferrably) have diesel motor, solid/beam axles, a mongrel gearbox that women hate, limited over bonnet vision etc etc.

In short, a cruiser (40,60,80,100...well, maybe not a 100......); any Patrol, any F series etc.

That's just me and my 3 cents worth....others will disagree and I have a large mail box, so let the hate mail commence...... hahahaha ;-))

When I bought my first 4by 30 odd year ago the bloke who sold it to me said "They are a bloody good truck these" refering to an old 1975 G60.

I just kept calling 4by's trucks since!!

Willem, in the USA 4bys aren't trucks I've had a few yanks tell me that - They are - Pickups - SUV's - All terrain vehicle (ATV). Terms that are being used here (but not by me)

Vinnie

I know that and I didn't say that.

I implied that the word 'truck', is something from the USA. Truck is also a term used for an open railway wagon. I was under the impression that 'Truck' was something from the USA and we have, over the years, included it in our lingo. Having spent a little time in the USA I am aware that Pick-up's are basically our Ute and SUV is a more modern application for wagon type 4x4's. And then there is a Softroader. We have one of them as well. :-D

When we were in Canada the term Truck was confoosing, they were called Tractor Trailers there instead of trucks or Semi Trailers, Tippers called Tractor Tippers or Trac Tips

I think Truck is fairly aussie from the latin "Tenwheelius Ruckus" which was shortened to T-Ruck in the early 18th century and truck today

Totally Dude,
Like...SUV is soooo much more offensive than truck in my book.......later.

I mean my Patrol isn't a utility, its a wagon and it doesn't play sports in fact its a non-turbo slug.....It sure feels like a truck compared to a normal family sedan or wagon......so as indicated previously .......BUILD A BRIDGE .......this is as pointless as complaining about peoples' spelling.

My fourby is a TRUCK now and forever

Truck 1 (n) is of Greek origin.(trokhos) meaning "wheel"
1;any of various heavy motor vehicles designed for carrying or pulling loads.
2. a hand truck.
3. a wheeled platform,sometimes equiped with a motor,for conveying loads in a warehouse or a freight yard.
4. one of the swiveling frames of wheels under each end of a railroad car or trolly car.
5. a set of bookshelves mounted on four wheels or castors, used in libraries.
I like the last one as it describes 4x4 wagon's to "T". Lol.

apparently i drive 2 trucks......... one is a cruiser and the freight is human / sub human...depends on time of day and kiddies frame of mind.
Other freight is human by-products lol
If all or most so called truck drivers ( 4X4 offroad ) and all other road users drove trucks ( real ones ) i think the roads would be a much safer place =:0B
then again....one of these would and does seem appealing lmao

I don't give a rats quoit, it's just a turn of phrase.

But.......if you want to get pedantic and draw lines in the sand, I have more of a problem with people calling Hino's, Mitsubishi's and UD's 'trucks' rather than 4x4's. "Trucks" do not come from Japan or Sweden.

A real truck is made by Mack, Kenworth, White, Western Star, Ford, International, Peterbilt, Autocar etc, have Road Ranger, Mack or Spicer gearboxes and are powered by Cat, Cummins, Detroit or Mack diesels.

Real truckies listen to outlaw 1970's country music, eat fried roadhouse food, have a gut and smoke.

End of story.

Agree, trucks carry stuff around. If you have a big tough TD rig that sounds like a truck, it still isnt. People use truck because they like the way it makes em feel when they say it. If you make your patrol into a 2wd is it still a truck? Is a diesel territory a truck? (when they make one) is it a truck becuase its diesel? is a subaru 4x4 dual range box a truck? is it a truck becuase it weighs 2.5T? None of these traits make a truck. its not being pedantic, its having a word to describe something. Call a large wagon that drives all 4 wheels with lots of gournd clearance a 4x4! anything wrong with 4x4? no, its the correct and probably most accurate term. A truck cant take me off roading, does not get 10L per 100km just because its a diesel, needs heavy diesel mechanics to work on it, cant use road car tyres or mag wheels and most of all I cant fit my family in it to drive around, cause its a truck! not a 4x4! And as for SUV man I hope we stamp that one out. What the hell is a sports - utility - vehicle? It is a lowered 4x4 navara/hilux with mags and low profile tyres? a BMW m3 ute? a subaru brumby with turbo? its a posers bull crap machine, someone who cares more about what others think about their car than they do, just like h2 and h3 drivers.

Don't get me wrong, I believe this is great for these men & who have to spend there life behind a wheel.
My first Truck was 180 Inter Semi 1958 ,Second added ,190 Inter with supercharged Cummings with boggy trailer ,was the truck of the day, then came the Peterbuilt,Kenworths which I have never owned ,wish I had .
