Hi everyone

We are currently travelling around Oz (in Bicheno in Eastern Tassie at moment) and in a few months will be heading towards Queensland.

We are considering leaving the car/camper somewhere secure for a week and spending a week living it up on an island - say Hayman, Hamilton etc.....

We have only just started to consider this so have no idea where ferries go from etc. From what I can see the most logical place would be around the Airlie Beach location.

Question is: are there any secure locations where you can leave your rig for a week to go and visit the islands. Given we are so dependant on it for the rest of the trip, I will have to be very comfortable with where I leave it.

Any suggestions or associated information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

Alan

The main service to the islands is conducted by the company Fantasea . They will leave from Shute Harbour a dozen or so times per day, so transport to the islands will be no issue. Be aware of the costs though, as some resorts may or may not include this into their prices. There are some brilliant camping beaches which you can have all to yourselves, run by National Parks, which are cheap to secure.

The largest, and only, real storage solution near Shute Harbour is Shute Harbour Secured Parking and Storage, located about 100m down the road from your departure point :-)

Depending on your itinerary, i can help you out with the best options :-) You could always give me the keys for a week :-)

Hi Andrew

Shutes Harbour Storage seems reasonable - $15 per day per item.

Has anyone had any first hand experience with this place?

Thanks also for your kind offer to look after the rig for me for a week.....I won't find it bogged on a Qld beach below the high tide mark will I? :)

Cheers - thanks for your help.

I've left my vehicle there several times with no problems. As can be seen by the photos on the website, it is a modern secure undercover parking area with payment/access gained from the Shell servo.

I only bogged that vehicle once....

Andrew

(don't know who owns the bogged vehicle, been there for some time)

Might be cheaper to do a package holiday and fly to Hamilton Isl from Brisbane and leave the rig at a safe storage facility. 3 near the airport.

Airlie is the gateway for Hayman/Hamilton, daily ferries and flights. Plenty of van parks in Airlie. Give one a call and they might know where you can store the rig.

Thanks - still working out which island and how to get there. Will bear this in mind if decide to fly and will check out the van park options also.

Cheers,

Some of the camping grounds at Cairns will store your van while you trip to the islands, providing you book the trip through their office.

We observed quite a few vans being replaced into the park for returning people, hooked up to the power. One person's car was given a wash also. Very nice service.

Really Andrew? The Whitsundays are also a damn site further away from Bicheno where they are at the moment.

Doesn't hurt to mention that the facility they seek is available in Cairns, and hence may well be available elsewhere as well, does it?

Yes really :-) Almost as far as you are to the Whitsundays.

Please don't confuse the situation available in other tourist areas of Australia with those available in the Whitsundays.....there is a distinct difference in culture that exists, not necessarily for the worse, just different.

You should come up this way Gerhardp1, we are a friendly bunch ;-)

"Almost as far as you are to the Whitsundays." Bicheno to Whitsundays ?

Clearly you don't know where Bicheno, Tas is located.

And if you are saying that there is no van park on the mainland that offers what the Cairns parks offer, just say so instead of beating around the bush.

Doesn't hurt to mention that the facility they seek is available in Cairns, and hence may well be available elsewhere as well, does it? That's in case you missed it the first time.

I was up your way last year for 2 months.

hehe....stress levels must be high where you live :-)

Clearly i do know where Bicheno is, spent some time around the Freycinet National Park, with some great memories of camping at wineglass bay. This was followed up by a nice sea-kayak trip to Schouten Island, then a overnight stay at some bungalows in Bicheno.

My point was, which i admit was written down incorrectly, was that the distance between Bicheno and Airlie is not that much different to your location and Airlie in the big scheme of things (more than a good days drive from here).

Your statements about missing it a first time is unnecessary and counterproductive. I am only trying to help them out due to my role within the community of Airlie Beach/Cannonvale.

FYI, there will be CPs that can look after your vehicle and van in Airlie/Cannonvale/Jubilee Pocket with most just leaving your vehicle "down the back" ......price would probably be around $11/day.

Yes, Cairns is 7 hours drive from the Whitsundays in case you missed it the first time :-)

Thanks Gerhardp1 and Andrew - appreciate the effort. I understand what is being said - and will look into the van park storage option once I have a better idea of where we want to go.

Cheers,

Alan
