I finally decided that I needed to service my elderly but still very functional Thomas winch. Heavy but has a lot of grunt. Stripped it down and no problems beyond a lot of grit and grime where it should not be.

Had a minor oil leak so I resealed the plate and now I need to top up the oil. So long since I did it before can't remember what type of oil to use. The stuff in it is dark pink and smells like hypoid.

Any suggestions or do I contact Thomas Winch Co in Qld? Not sure they are the same crowd as I haven't seen Thomas 4wd winches on the market for years.

In my EW8000 the electric motor gearbox takes ATF through the 1/4" allen key headed plug at the front of the gearbox and the worm box takes B140 grade according to the owners manual.

Use Auto Trans Fluid (ATF Dextron III)

Im sure these winches are still in production as Parks Victoria still use them on some Landcruiser trays
