I am in the process of buying a 1994 HZJ75 series Landcruiser, the whole car is saturated with red
pilbara dust especially the engine bay, where it looks baked on.
The car is an ex work vehicle and has 330 000km on it all done in the
pilbara, so you can imagine it looks baked on I have only seen the car from photo's.
Can anyone offer some advice as to efficiently remove this dust, as I dont fancy scrubbing this stuff for a week, or is this is what is usually takes to remove it properly
Thanks

When it comes to Bulldust you will only get the stuff you can see, ie external, inside of panels , and way up under the dash etc will still be there when it goes back to Japan as scrap metal, unless you strip it down to the chassis and wash each part , other than that the dirt won't hurt it , better than beach sand

I don't mind the stuff you can't see, I am interested to know what is the best way to clean the baked on stuff you can see.
I am hoping others on this
forum have some good remedies or tips on how to clean it off without too much scrubbing, say with a good truckwash or caustic solution that won't harm the paintwork, rubber, electrics. etc
Thanks for any suggestions

OK then if you don't mind the hidden stuff , here is 2 ways I would do it, stick a sprinkler under it and or under the bonnet for about an hour, give it a good soaking, then hit it with the hose to get the bulk off. let it dry, get some CT18 truck wash and a garden sprayed , the little one is what I use , holds 2 lts of water and has a pump on top. get them from Hardware stores or Kmart, and apply the solution , let it stand for 30 mins and wash it off , OK now get to it , .....go on , turn the pc off

Gday seaview mate the only thing ive found is ct 18 truckwash will shift most of it even used it as a polish to shift stained paint or a parts wash brush for the under bonnett stuff mongrel of a job but
however ive got red dust stains on white paint work that even cut/polish wont move
but be careful with the ct18 ive found if its used regurly without a good polish now & then it slowly removes paint work
aaagghhh the red dust we love it

I know what you mean, truck wash can be prtty severe on alloy as
well, makes it dull, wouldn't like to know what it does to rubber in the long run.

In my experience you won't get it off the vehicle you describe. Once it's baked on it's there for good. The Iron Oxcide will chemically bond with the paint and other areas of the car.
Quite frankly I'd be more interested in it's mechanical condition if I was you.
I've recently sold a three and a half year old 4wd and the only way I could get a reasonable market value was to have it totally respayed.

Kim

Having subjected seven different 4wd's to the red outback dust over the years there is no way you will ever remove it, as kimprado said it is there forever especially if it got wet while the dust/mud was there.
A truck with that many k's under those conditions would want to be very cheap as nearly everything will be
well worn (or worn out), dust +corrugations increases wear considerably.

Hello Kimprado and Peter2
For the iron oxcide that has eaten into the paint there is a commercial product called Rio that works perfectly . From memory the label indicated that it was mainly a very weak [ 1/4 of 1% ? ] solution of sulfuric acid . Spray on painted surfaces only and wash off quickly . If you are interested I can chase down who the manufacturer is .

Try a commercial vehicle detailer that specialises in earthmoving equipment or does the vehicles that come in off
mine sites etc for auction,like
Allsorts Mobile Cleaners 0148945737. . Don't know what he uses but sure does get the red crap off the machines at work.

Forget about the aesthetics, but beware of its condition mechanically.
With that many clicks in the
Pilbara and if the price is right, I would resign it to "bush pig" status and let it wear its
heritage as a badge of honour.

Cutting compound. It will be an extremely tedious and time consuming job. Forget about it and just drive it.
An ex work vehicle with 330K in the
Pilbara???? Can't think of any outfit that would have a vehicle like that for more than say 80,000kms up there. Make sure it's cheap and I mean real cheap.

Plenty of 4wds on Stations in the
Pilbara with those Kms.
However, I would'nt touch a "mustering Susuki". The boys are more interested in a beer rather than shining the transport after a days work!

If its a station vehicle it could be alright.....wouldnt go near a
mine vehicle with those sort of Kms though.
And as for the dust Id respray it or learn to live with it.
Cheers
