Hello all,

I have a dilema. I need to identify the name of the part shown in this pic:
!MPG:4!

it is on the injector pump of the 4JBT-1 2.8 td. It is to do with the advanced timing for the pump. I Have scoured my manual from start to finish, but am unable to find it referenced anywhere.

I hope someone can help.

Cheers

Mike

It can't be as Jeeps don't have such components so how could you even guess what it was??

Jeeps are only fitted with Hot Dogs as the perfect US of A invention.

It looks like it is a fuel cut off solenoid it is about the correct location and size but i'm a bushy and can always be wrong.
Hope it helps

Its a fuel cut solinoid, when you turn the vehicle off it stops fuel to the rack so you dont get run on.

Fuel cut off solinoid

Why do you need to know ?
Think it may be a problem ?
or
you just want to know what it is ?

Just doing some research. Had the injectors cleaned today due to some ongoing issues with performance- turns out two injectors were blocked. Mechanic mentioned if that did not fix the symptoms, this was the next option, apparently quite common on this model pump. Internals bugger up, being an electronic thigo- bob (putting those tech terms to use here), and can cause symptoms such as light smoke on start up, rough idle when cold. Im intrigued by it being used for fuel cut off, as I though it had something to do with the advance timing, as I have been told by 3 diesel mechanics?

Perhaps a similar looking doohiky does different things on different vehicles.

Thanks to all those that have 'helped' (term used VERY loosely LOL) Its always good fun ;)

Okay, here we go. First thanks to all those that have replied.

Second. being armed with some information (dangerous, I know), Ive reviewed the manual and the diagrams that they have for injector pumps to suit the 4JB series and I can confirm the part in question is NOT a fuel cut off valve. On the model pump in question, the fuel cut off is mounted vertically, whereas this part is mounted horizontally.

Not to matter tho, we have eliminated one pesky culprit.

So, any further advances on what theis doohiky may be, or is it a thinga ma gig???

You are very right it does advance the fuel timing during warm up etc. You can check to see if is working by breaking the connection at the thermostat with the bullet connection (orange temp wire?). You will hear the relays clicking on the dvs side of the engine bay and a slight change in engine note.

If you leave it disconnected you will have a VERY noticeable knock...more than usual I know 4Jb1T are noisy!

I found mine ran better disconnected for awhile but after running 3 tanks (300litre) with Gull Bio D the solenoid cleaned and started working and now runs much better. (this was all just after purchase)

Still going to do the injectors though and have a slight drain back problem from idle...it sounds like its missing at idle and takes a minute to idle well but if you pump the bleeder before you start it idles from cold like a dream....not too concerned but will sort it out over time.

Just glad its cleaning itself out and with a few adjustments its pulling harder and harder, just about gotten rid of the huge lag!! I will fit the intercooler and cut and fit the bonnet scoop (so it looks like a 2002 3.0l Rodeo) then get it dyno tuned!

Matt.

Thanks Matt Mu.

I shall check it out during the week.

The Gull Bio D does work a treat. Ive been running bio fuel for just over 12 months now, and I tell you I notice the difference if it runs on anything else.

I rectified some of my drain back issue with installation of a one way valve, and also replaced the separator and filter with a cav system from denco. This also freed up enough room to fit a second battery of N70 size under the bonnet with a very minor mod to the power steering reservoir. But cold start is still a problem

Id be interested to know what you did to get rid of your lag, im getting ready to fit a boost adjuster and to wind the boost up a smidge.

Yes boost has been adjusted a little, but also have adjusted the amount of extra delivery from the boost-compensator when boost hits. No use giving it more air and no more fuel or more fuel and no more air!

Goodluck with it.

Matt.

Without seeing the bigger picture, to me it looks like some sort of fuel flow sensor.....
