Barrett 350 HF Radio

nissangu Iam in the same boat have recently aqired an old hf to which needs aservice to bring it up standard. have been quoted aroun $100 or so .I need an aerial $400 .but ithink compared to Barrett at around $3800 i beleive and sat phone about that price plus conecting costs @$200 and monthly service fee $35 @calls @$2 per minute.. Hope i have made the right decision

Do you mean the 250 ? There are a lot of ex WA police 250's around that can be made good, but in the original configuration are useless.

The unit I have got is in woking order with VKS and RFDS channels fitted + selcall. It has been a real find, it looks and performs like new. I am just after tips on where to mount it in the GU, as it is alot bigger than a UHF unit.

I think that HF is the way to go over Satphone. On a Satphone only one person hears you, who ever is on the other end. On HF radio, the entire network can hear you, and help may be not all that far away, perhaps just the next sand hill away, not just the base station in the city.
