Hi
Does anyone kmow of a good off road camper van. The type where the beds stick out the ends. My son is looking at them and they seem to be limited to a few makes; Jayco, Coromal, Palomino.Any information on the ability of these or other campervans to withstand rough roads would be appreciated.
Regards
Ken

Type Camper Trailer into Google and you will find a plethora of local manufacturers. Take it from there. Once you have isdolated your choice then ask the question here on the forum. I am sure you will get heaps of help.

You will find that what your son is after is classified as a Camper Trailer. Jayco Caravans et al manufacture them.

A Campervan is described as a motorised camping unit such as Toyota Commuter Bus, Mazda Bus, Nissan Bus with pop top etc. Anything bigger is called a RV.

There are Camper Caravans such as Kimberley Karavan (around $70,000) or a Bushtracker Offroad Van(around $100,000) and others.

Cheers

Hi kenkinga,

I had a Windsor Rapid offroad camper van and reckon its one of the better brands with the fold out ends. Do a forum search on Windsor Rapid and you can read many threads on it - and click on my rig details and see some pics of mine.

It was with some regret that I sold mine to get a camper trailer, as at the end of the day a van is simply too large and heavy for many tracks - all about horses for courses.

Cheers

Captain

I have seen a couple of off road campervans, one was a converted unimog, not sure who did it, the other one was bought second hand off Britz, it was an Iveco 4x4 van, it looked really tough, solid bash plates, etc. It had spent the first part of it's life around Uluru.

Hi Ken - we owned a Coromal Magnum offroad Campervan .
Towed it everywhere. Loved it. Traded it last year on a Coromal offroad Poptop.
The Magnums were aluminium. The new models (Silhouette) are firbreglass so cannot comment on the toughness of the new models. Ours went beach, desert, mountains, and always offroad. Never a screw loose.
Do a search on Coromal Magnum, but look for the offroad models.
They are worth the time and effort of hunting for.

I have a Jayco Eagle off road, but I haven't done any serious off road work with it. A mate had an offroad Swan and took it from Broken Hill up to Innamincka and back thru the Flinders, and he had problems with lots of dust getting in I think one of he's drawers collapsed as well.

Chassis and frame wise I think my Jayco would be fine on rough dirt tracks, however I would make some mods to strengthen some of the internal cabinets and also improve the protcection of the plumbing etc under the van.

Because of the width and weight of the van, I don't think I would take it on any High Country tracks or across the desert, but I should handle most other tracks.

Hi Ken, definately have a look at Goldstream. Far betteter built than Jayco IMHO. You can go and see for yourself at their factory in Pakenham, ask for Steve if you are in Vic. Their site is not great and doesn't do them justice but hey they do vans not sites!
We looked for 4 years before deciding and always came back to the Goldstream

G'Day Ken,

Most of these vans limited to dirt road rather than off-road ability. You will usually find it i the fine print - NOT for the salesman.

Check out some of the forums for info form other owners, this may be a good place to start

campertrailers
