Pajman Pete (SA)
We have decided that it is time to put the
Heritage Listed Pajero out to pasture and are in the market for someting a little more recent.
We flirted with the idea of a troopy (I like the shape - but not of the new ones!) but are coming down to either a Patrol or Land Cruiser.
We want a diesel, and lean towards a yota but have no firm ideas beyond that.
Intended use is touring, probably with a van some of the time. We want to be able to continue to head of into the sticks but are not interested in extreme 4WD adventuring. We will also be retiring mums shopping box at the same time and will drop back to one family vehicle so the Bush Princess would like something that is Ok round town (she has no problems with the Paj)
We either have the option of going for an older unit and paying for it ourselves, or getting a newer beast and financing under a notavated lease.
Budget around $24,000 but could be stretched for the right vehicle.
One last question for the yota brigade - would you recommend a late 80 series or an early 100?
All right everyone, sell me a car!
Thanks
Pete

Your intended usage points you right back to a Pajero. Can't go past the 3.2 DID. Will take you anyware you want to go and is still a civilized car around town. Also much easier on fuel than a cruiser or patrol.
A good NM DID can be had for around the low $20Ks

Go an 80 Series Turbo Diesel - you wont regret it :-))
Seriously though either an 80 Series of a GQ with 4.2 litre turbo diesels are a good choice. Plenty of parts and accessories out there for you to choose from to set up your vehicle. Patrols will be a bit cheaper than the Cruisers.
You will defiantly notice a difference in size.

Not baiting anyone, stating a fact, if i was in the market and not buying a Landy, the DiD pajero would be my choice.
I was actually being serious for a change!!!

Check out my ad in the Trader section for my 2000 4.2TD Patrol. I'm asking $25K, but could be persuaded to drop to $24K for a fellow forumite....lol. I'm only selling cos I "found" the truck of my dreams a few months ago......
Anyway, good luck with the search........
Cheers

Hi Pete
I had an 85 superwagon until about 6 years ago, one day it was worth more to the wrecker than me. I got myself an 80 DX and did everything to it, I love it, but my wife hates it, as it is to round, to big, to roly, to hard in the seats and the list goes on. If you are deciding between a 100 and an 80 I would go for the 80, just for the little thins, eg: power box with fused outlets and not so big and 6 stud wheels.
If I was buying something for just touring I would by another Paj and my wife would love it and so would I.
Have fun
Craig

Interesting.
I am going through the same thing with my 96 2.8 ITD paj.
Keep it going a bit longer, spend some more money on it ???
Or trade it in on ------????.
I am loosing about $1000.00 a year in depreciation.
Would be more on something else.
Decided to keep the old paj going for another 3 to 5 years.
Even if I need a new engine after 300,000 plus K.
Body is not too bad and I know the owner has looked after it. :o)
Set it up pretty
well for touring too :o).
Not tempted by the NMs or NPs and 3.2DiD.
Did think of swapping in a 3.2DiD into this body.
Might be tempted by a good 80 series or GQ patrol, but what do I gain, more robust engine and
suspension, but do I need that for 1 to 2 trips a year? And dislike it the rest of the time as being too big?
Friend has a 80 series, but runs a small car for around town. His compromise.

Oh No Pajman Pete, was about to announce the Pajman Pesty !!!!!
I bought a
heritage listed one on the weekend hahahahahahahaha
Well dont fret tooooo much, its to replace the more
heritage listed hilux work horse, but the cruiser isnt going anywhere or even being listed as
heritage yet, despite being 2 years older than your paj hahahaha
Dont buy Roachies trol either, cos you will never get the drooooool stains outa the mudguards LOL
I suggest a late model 80 series T/D or another paj if you are going to drive it around town, and the Bush Princess is into doing a lot of
parking.
Then again, keep the runabout and leave to camping rig at
home ready for action on friday nights, so that way you can leave your goodies in it and its not such a target for light fingered mongrels in
parking lots.
Cheers Pesty

Pete,
Anything but the Lada Niva. Can't stand the thought of calling you Comrade Pete and, with your background, we might have to look seriously at your security clearance.
Is the novated lease a serious option? My daydreams often involve a new Prado (interested to see how the new diesel donk shapes up). Daydreams often rudely interrupted by Elise of course, but it is good to dream.
Hope you are
well,
Matt.

Yes Matt,
The lease is a serious option for up to around $25K if we sell both current vehicles. I still have my work crummydore for running around town. Beyond that the payments cut too far into my pocket money. I did the poor but building capital thing with our first
home, now I want to enjoy spending some money on lifestyle. I also like the idea of buying all my fuel from before tax dollars as
well.
The security clearance is long gone! Now I have to read the papers to find out what is going on.
Pete

Hardly the last one, I see them all the time around here, including one guy who has exactly the same model, colour and all. Only the
driving lights are different.

Hello Pajman Pete
If you went for a 80 series even though a great 4by would you be going forward.
Maybe get something younger or stay with what you know.
Just a bloke from work bought a 80 series looked OK but he spent many $$$ on it a long in the tooth.IMO

Pete,
You need the chosen transport of the discerning offroader, get a Troopy!!
Err, I don't get this one, when did they change after 1970??

Have you though of getting a late N L , you could then swap a lot of your accessories over to the newer vehicle, as you will get bugger all if you sell them on the vehicle. And they are tried and tested if you look hard you should find one with less than 100000ks
Cheers Pete
