Hi,

How many of you replace your gearbox oil at 40k?? In my GQ I always did and have done to date in the GU. However just re-looked at the service manual and found that the transfer and diff oils should be do at 40k but the gearbox oil only needs to be changed at 100k. Read it a number of times because I was sure it used to be 40k. Not sure of the reasoning but 40k is way over servicing.

2003 4.2 Patrol, gearbox, transfer case, both diffs, brake fluid, power steering fluid, clutch fluid and coolant - all get changed around 40,000km mark. Oil and filters at every 5,000kms. Done it for the last 10 years on 3 different 4wds and never had any of those components fail in over 500,000km. When the cost is spread over a few months it really doesn't amount to much. Also replace all my hoses and belts every 2 years and have the motor de-carboned around every 50,000km. The Patrol hasn't had any mechanical work done it (now has 115,000km on it) and still running the same brake pads etc as from new. I reckon a bit of preventative maintenance goes a long way

the only oil that is really important is the lsd rear dif as the oil used is a self depleting oil which means the additives dissolve away and u will know when this happens diff specialists recommend changing the oil every 20,000 ks, i have gone over this margin many times and the lsd is still working 100% at 330,000ks. col
