I have Ome and have been told no but that was by a salesperson so bought new ones anyway. I also looked at the klms my'n has done 300k so presume the metal would possibly have some fatigue ??. Not worth the hassle of a broken/snapped shock out in the middle of now where. Steve M

Thanks Stephen, the reason i ask for regassing is because i just want o fix the ride for say 10k to 20k kms until i can afford a higher lift, i think at the moment it is 1.5 to 2" lift. can you or anyone recommend pehaps a cheap replacment that will serve the job until replacement times?

Hi there jbwetzels, I wouldnt waste your money. I presume by your question you will be getting a bigger lift eg 3 or 4 inch if thats the case I would weight till you are ready and do the lot in one hit. Dont forget it will be more than just springs and shocks if doing a 3 or 4 inch lift. Dont forget caster plates etc wheel alighnment and the likes included. There are heaps of mobs out there that do lifts but you need to find some one that is into 4wdrives and know what there talking about. Maquarie 4x4 at windsor would be a start. I have never had any thing done by them but just an example. Jump on the yelow pages and go from there do some research. There are that many different types/brands of lifts out there and will probably get a different answer every time in regards to what is the best. OME, tough dog, pedders, xjm, heaps. I will find out what my mates got on his 80 series cause you dont want the same as he has got. It is shocking on corrugated roads shakes the shi##er out of you plus the dash shakes like you wouldnt believe. Way too hard even if he airs down. I think what ever he has was meant to be carring heavy loads so might be applicable for that purpose but I couldnt stand driving it all day round town. Steve M

Are you sure it is a gas problem?
When you compress them, do they expand back out again at a slow rate?
(Shows the gas is OK.)
Other problem with shocks is that the oil wears out.
Valves and seals will also wear out with time.
I used to get plain oil shocks redone by putting new oil in.
Not sure how easy it is to do with OMEs and gas.
I have seen some shock reconditioners advertise rebuilding gas shocks, but nor sure how they do it. Last time I checked, it was almost as cheap to buy new ones.
The koni sports I used to run in another car were rebuildable, and you used to have a range of oils (different viscosities) to use to get what you wanted, besides the usual koni adjustment.

OME shocks are only about $100 each (I just bought 2x N142 shocks for $204 inc GST)
Put Pedders on a Bravo ute recently and they cost about the same for their gas shocks (front) and $150ish for their foam cell shocks (rear).

OME are a relitively cheap shock, are not rebuildable & even if they were it would cost you almost as much as just replacing them. Munroe make a slightly cheaper version that look the same just not painted yellow ;-) Life span is totally dependant on where you take them & how fast you drive. I've seen several sets fail on a single outback trip as they couldn't handle the heavy weight over the corrogations at speed, then on the other hand I know of a few that have had them on for over 150,000 KM of not so difficult driving. Regassing is not common & usually only on the upmarket brands.
Cheers Craig..............

Why not buy the shocks for the 2" lift now and put them on. They ought to fit and save fiddling around with what you've got?

Hi Max,sounds like he wants to go to a 3 or 4 inch lift so the current shocks or purchasing new one's would not suit him later when he lifts it as they wont be long enough for a 3 or 4 inch lift. Going by what he's asked I would say he has a 2 inch lift already but for 10k I wouldnt waste my money and wait a bit till ready for the full lift. Steve M

Just what do you mean by "the reason i ask for regassing is because i just want o fix the ride for say 10k to 20k kms until i can afford a higher lift, i think at the moment it is 1.5 to 2" lift."? What's wrong with the ride?
