Hi Guys, i am heading over to
Melbourne for the weekend with the camper. We are staying a couple of nights at flashy Coburg 5 star caravan park but on the way over i was hoping to find a spot to put the camper up for the night. I don't reallt like the idea of a
parking bay on a main highway.(idiots) Anywhere within an hour of half way would be good. Brew

IF it was a bit of
bush camping you had in mind Brew,
Little Desert NP was good in winter a few years back (near Knill - Kaniva - its not far in off the highway) - dry as a Arab's sandal now but. Numerous tracks to choose in from the highway - some very sandy but - I guess fire risk and the parched conditions might make it a trial at present..... only stop I've made on that leg ('cept for the Gramp.s - and that would be just as dry, if not burnt out in all the good bits close to the highway !).

Brew,
If you get a bit further, you can turn left about 10k past
Ararat to the Langi Ghiran Conservation Park
camp area. Its about 6k off the highway, and is a nice spot with loos.

There are a few good spots in the
Grampians that aren't burnt out - around the
Mount Zero area. I am sure there are good spots by the River in Horsham, and I think you should be able to find parts of
Ngarkat Conservation Park that aren't closed for fire ban reasons, but are nice camping.
But it's drier than an Afghan Camel Trader's Fart out there, so be careful.

On the coastal route we stayed at the Sawpit
campsite Mt Clay forest, inland a bit from
Portland - 4 km NW of Narrawong. Lovely spot. Pit
toilets but no water.
Returning via an inland route, we stayed at Mt Buangor State Park
Middle Creek Campground - nice big area in a forest - 8 km drive in from highway. Langri Ghiran State Park is not far away; we just chose Mr Buangor and were pleased with it.
Toilets, water from a tank was stained (by gum leaves i presume).

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions. See how far we get and will decide on the fly. The secret spot sounds good.

Try the
Grampians -
well worth going - sure there were fires last year, but it has come back a treat - and they were working on some of the "
bush camping spots" when we were there back in November - get on to National Parks for the latest - there are also some good caravam parks - in
Halls Gap -
Grampians Gate is quite nice - great people running it - and to see how the land comes back after fire is impressive -only a couple of hours into Coburg from there - you're not staying at a caravan park called Pentridge are you? - just joking - have heard the Coburg park is really good.
(For those who don't know - Pentridge was Melbournes jail until a few years ago - now most of it is housing - the big bluestone wall at the front is still there with the impressive entrance gates)

Coburg CVP indeed mate. Used to be a good brick and bluestone walled place there that lots knew. If you were coming Southwards there is a good place near here. We stayed by the surf club building at Cape
Bridgewater. Great view just 3 metres above the sea :-)

We just finished a family holiday half way around Oz and one of the nicest
places we camped was @ Johanna beach, just west of Otway NP on the Great Ocean Road.
Free Camp, large grassy areas, berhind the dunes, long drops -- just beautiful!

I second that one. Really nice with thundering surf over the dunes where the Joanna grounded. Go in the Blue Johanna Road for great
views over the area. The Red Johanna Road is
too easy.

Brew, if you were going via the Great Ocean Road we would be insulted if you didn't let us know and call in.
