When we say, 'Got my deisel tuned', what exactly should we expect to be done, or what does get done to the engine to 'tune it?'

Not much except perhaps timing, filters and nozzles.
The large component for labour is the time taken in the office to produce a creative invoice with the greatest number of zeros to get close to 1000.

Hi Wayne,
I think
John is talking about a service.
When you get your diesel engine tuned it usually means getting your fuel pump adjusted for optimum performace and / or efficiency. This involves getting the vehicle dynoed and adjusting the fuel flow while monitoring exhaust gas temperature to make sure egt isn't too high to damage the engine but enabling you to get the most out of your engine.
I am talking about a non computer controlled diesel enginer here.

Wayne,
agree. I used to build warships in a previus life and once while on sea trials spent the day with some dude from Germany who was sent out by the Equipment Manufacturer to "Tune", the Main Propulsion engine. Now we are not talking your average Diesel here (not gas turbine), as you could
well understand BUT, you know what he monitored with all his fancy gear..........Exhaust Gas Temp. This was his basis for any adjustments he made.

When I put
mine in for the 100,000k service and tune up,
Injectors checked and replace/cleaned.
pump timing checked to stock setting.
glow plugs and glow circuit checked for operation.
Basic tune up, about $200.00 plus what needs replacing.
Now if I out in in to be tuned on a dyno.
New filters - air and fuel, they will insist on them to get everything right.
New injectors.
EGT hooked up and pump timing played with on the dyno to get the best performance.
You need to say if you are looking for economy or power , or a compromise.
Usually costs $600 to $800 depending on what parts need replacing like injectors.
I do the filters myself before it goes in.
