Castrol VMX from Supercheat.

Bi-annual gearbox change, bit overboard isn't it?

Hi Davoe,
Castrol VMX-M
Valvoline Duragear 75/85
are both OK.

In my humble experience the Valvoline Duragear 75/85 gives a smoother change over wider temp ranges.

Ill check it out currently i have a bit of trouble getting it into 1st and sometimes crunches downchange into 2nd and is generaly harder to use than the work utes. Some may be due to wear and tear (230k) but I have heard the right oil makes a big difference

Davoe,

After some research on here, I went with the VMX M as it had got a good rap. Can't say that I noticed any appreciable difference although the gearbox was pretty good to begin with so maybe for an older box it would be OK. I believe that the 'M' is for Mitsubishi, for whom it was developed. Plenty of 80 series owners swear by it though.

Couldn't get it from auto parts places, but the Castrol distributor carried it.

Matt.

I have tried a synthetic called All Terrain 80. Get it from a truck spares place near here. It is actually made at Hervey Bay. At first there was no difference.

After a while I am sure it has coated the gearbox or something as the I am sure the gearshift is a lot smoother now and helps the 80 series notchy shift.

Mine has done 300k and I am sure this oil helps.

Davoe,

I'm with Alan, I use All terrain 80 as well, it is made by Synforce (Hervey Bay) and made a huge difference to the shift Baulk problem 80's have. My gearbox is original and the vehicle has done 300000km.

Enjoy

Hi

Castrol VMX-M

This stuff is designed for the paj and magnas, both had a, well we all know gear box. You can get it from a Mitsubishi dealer.

Also a tube of Nulon stuff for gearboxes help, I always no when winter is coming and I get to the top of the street and can not get 2nd, time for an oil change.

Have fun

If you dont know whats in there, put the vxm-m semi synthetic or the valvoline in and you will probably have a smile ear to ear.... How many kms do u do yearly, if its 60k, then twice a year is per book....and per book means well maintained.

As with Alan and Greg above I also use Synforce All-Terrain 80. My 80 series clocked over 300,000km last week and runs great. In fact I am now using the Synforce range of oils in all my vehicles, boats, motorbikes, generators, lawnmow......... You get the picture.
My front diff was getting very noisy especially at 100km/h. After 10,000km of running the All-terrain 90 in the diff it has all but stopped making any noise.
Won't use anything else now.
