Hi. I’m new to the group and enjoy what I have seen so far.
Being a 4.2 fan I purchased an 1988 built Y60 Non Turbo Wagon in 2000 which I still own today having traveled trouble free for 560,000 Klms never touched other than regular oil + filters.
When I decided to replace it in 2005 I went for the 4.2ST, beautiful vehicle to drive but the lack of low down power gives me grief, once the turbo cuts in she's away, but when starting off - specially on a hill she is very poor.
I have discussed this with the Nissan Service people at Nissan Bundaberg only to be told that its quite normal and the performance is satisfactory ????
I try to explain that my second Patrol the 1988 model would leave this one for dead.....
I have been told the current emission pollution control is to blame for the lack of power, that the injector pump has been significantly 'cut back' to improve the emission pollution, that I am luck as Nissan have stopped making the 4.2 version and mine was one of the last !!!!
Does anyone have an answer for me to help get this vehicle going........
It's so disappointing when I have had such a good run with my 1988 model I would expect more power than I have, because basically they are the same power plant so with all the extra bits that Nissan have put on the overall result is very poor. Fuel consumption is also down compared to my old vehicle where I could regularly get the 10klm / Lt.
I guess the answer is that with all the latest technology and improvements in design, the performance and economy take a backward step.
Hoping some one has an answer for me.
Thank you.
Brendon & Diane Wilkinson.

Put it on gas. Will increase hp20%, torque 20%, torque will kick in around 1500rpm, will run quieter & cleaner, overall fuel costs will be lower. Installation around $4000 mark.

Mate,

Take it to a Diesel specialist and get the timing and fuel checked. I have a 2006 model which is the same and it is quite common for the timing to be retarded. Mine was out considerably and the difference was great. Get them to check Boost (mine was 10psi), Timing is 0.72mm +/- 0.02mm (I believe this is correct) and they can turn the fuel up at little to give a bit more poke but what exhaust gas temp (shouldn't go over 550 degrees). Please note that I'm not mechanic but did a fair amount of research and spoke to my local diesel specialist who knew all about Nissan 4.2TDi timing issues......Hope this helps....

Me-n-Di

The 4.2 Nissan does not have a lot in the way of new technology, just strangulated old technology to comply with emissions. There are plenty of improvements available which many people here will be able to help with or has already been discussed before. At least it is reliable, simple and easy to modify.

Brendon, I know what you mean mate......I replaced a 1993 RX GQ with aftermarket Safari turbo, with a new GU Patrol 4.2TD in 2000 and was immediately aware of the drop in (apparent) power.

One thing to bear in mind is that the GU you have bought will have 3.9 ratio diff centres, whereas the older GQ probably had 4.1's. Couple this to the facts that

1). you're probably running slightly bigger tyres (32" on the GU v 31" on the GQ)
2). that the GU is a bit heavier and wider and higher (more wind drag ....maybe),
3). GU's factory turbo was originally designed for the MQ Patrol's 3.3TD motor.....

......... then you'll see that everything is conspiring against the GU.

You can fix it as has been described in other recent posts....bigger turbo, adjust fuel injector pump and have injectors re-calibrated, etc etc

I blame the apparent sluggish engine on the high gearing of the newer model. My old mans GQ feels racier than my Td6 because you it gets thru the gears much quicker from the close ratio effect of a high ratio diff and the gearbox.

Common solutions are:

Put on a 3" dump pipe and exhaust with free flow muffler
Block or remove the EGR system
Clean out the inlet manifold from all the soot the EGR put in there that sticks to the blow by oil
Replace intercooler outlet damper valve with a straight thru pipe
Add Boost controller
Increasing Boost
Fuel timing
Fuel Flow increase

big bikkies to alter on road gearing and still have a decent long distance flat top vehicle

Talk to MTQ, I dealt with Toowoomba but they do an upgrade on turbo and exhaust, beware or adjusting fuel as this is likely to give warranty issues
It now goes like "it should"
