Hi all,

This is my first thread so be gentle.

I am considering buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. Done my homework and I think the vehicle will do what I want in the way of off roading, my main concern is the lack of "after market" accesories, long range tanks, rear wheel carrier and dual battery set up etc, it seems every thing must be custom built, nothing much is available off the shelf, so to speak, and the prices I have been quoted for custom built long range tank and rear wheel carrier is a bit frightening, is this typical for Jeeps ?

Bazza

I will be very frank with you.

Firstly, I have an 05 KJ CRD JEEP and therefore can speak with a chit load of authority on this subject, unlike 98% of the others that bless this forum with their presence.

Secondly, take no notice what so ever of the 'pink Nissan mafia' aka Roachy (ringleader) BONZ (minister for anything and everything) Truckster (MInister for propagander) and Brew (Minister for support of the other three)

Now down to business.

From your post it would seem you wish to take your JEEP off road and by that I mean outside the watchful range of automotive support services such as communications, recovery/towing and or repairs.

If so, this is the major pitfalls with the warranty if you can contact JEEP service warranty people that is.

Check for yourself re JEEP recovering from areas off of designated roads.

If you manage to self recover to civilisation the vehicle fault can only be diagnosed by a JEEP dealer with the 'special' electronic analysis gear.

Then any parts etc have to be genuine and the replaced part has to be intact and returned to Chrysler for the warranty to apply.

The current JEEPS usually have between 3-5 electronic management systems (Computers) in them which all have to be in absolute synchronisation with each other. I know this because the ones in my KJ had a 'bitch session' and wouldn't talk to each other. They did this on a number of occassions when 'growing up' within the warranty period and now seem to get on excellently.

There have been a number of dud part issues such as EGR valve, Torque Converter, Glow plug. Also a globallrecall for front ball joints which the dealer swore black and blue were ok but they hade to be replaced under the global order.

Funny how they don't clank and bang any more .

The dealership/s I have used have been excellent to deal with and service 100% plus. Cannot fault them on that issue.

Modifying.

You are correct re lack of hard mod accessories available in Aust. USA has a heap of stuff that you just have to hunt for on the Internet.

You can get after market Suspension kits, underneath body armour and second battery kits readily in Aust, however Aux fuel tanks are different matter. The reason being that there isn't all that much room available under a JEEP for a second tank.

Now having said all that, I do take my KJ half off road. (shut up Roachie) By that I mean I will take it into the high country of Victoria, beach (sand) areas etc etc but only where I know I can get the sucker recovered if the electronics chit themselves.

Elsewhere , Lucy the Troopy takes me and her wherever it may be.

Check out this site for a starter, which may give you a bunch of 'leads' where elese to obtain info.

One thing you didn't mention is poor resale value, that is if you can get a private purchaser or trade-in dealer even interested in buying it off you, other than for a ha ha price. What do reckon Lucy?

I think your on drugs Arkay and have no idea what your talking about. I have been looking at the deprecation of a few 4bys and there about the same and its better than my oldmans top of the line cruiser to which is losing 10k a year (for the first few years)

After reading this Ken, i gotta ask, why have it if you don't trust that the car will get you there and back.

I know a few Jeep owners that take their Jeeps everywhere with none to very minor problems.

Dudes!

I never ever said I didn't like, or hated, or wanted to sell my KJ.

Just said I wouldn't trust the sucker out of civilisation range.

I love it, SWMBO reckons its the best thing since canned pee, even better than the dish washer or sliced bread, and thats the one person who must be satisfied with the product.

I have modded mine with a 2.5in OME lift kit, underneath body armour kit (sump, transmission, transfer case, & fuel tank) second set of wheels with muddies and have toyed with adding a coloured coded ARB front bar. Second battery is in a box in the back. So these things aren't impossible, Also has a Har-R tow bar with voyager controller.

Its used mainly as the town driver by SWMBO and my plaything (toy) when I want some fun. In all wheel drive it sticks to the dirt like baby poo to a blanket.

The only thing missing that isn't provided for at this time is a snorkel.

Its also a lease vehicle which at this stage I most probably will keep.

The only thing that has cost me money is the plastic skirts/trims which both myself and SWMBO have touched up ever so slightly. Thats an issue between me and the insurance company with excess's etc that I think everyone has.

Other than that just make sure you get a diesel as someone else said petrol versions need a tanker following them.

Have a nice week-end

The resale angle is much the same for all 4WD's.

Private sale will kill a trade in any day, however it all boilsdown to your situation at the time of selling etc

Please whatever you do buy a diesel, the fuel economy is very poor on petrol, and the diesel has more than enough power and torque.

You do not say where you are from, but an email to oposite lock in Bunbery WA, will reveal many options for your car. They are situated right along side the JEEP dealer here.

Yep! diesel is the only way to go and the diesel engine in these vehicles is sensational.

The Options/mods issue really doesn't exist. As these things are available if you are prepared to hunt them down.

Hi barry, I have a late 06 Grand cherokee 65th crd (love the diesel) there a great unit. I have had zero problems with it to.
I have changed the springs for king springs which are a 25mm lift and are stiffer than the yanks super super soft set up which makes it alot better car.
There is more and more parts for them coming onto the market and there is a long range tank which requires the moving of the spare wheel to a rear wheel carrier which is not available yet but should be soon. A few more bullbars are coming onto the market to.

I didn`t think the extra 10k for the limited was worth it over the Laredo for leather seats and not much else(but thats your call)

Mine is for sale as I am losing my company car and now need a dual cab ute for work, if your interested.

Cheers
Stu

That towbar complaint is a interesting one.
From what I hear its a hayman and reece problem with to few mounting points. The new one has nine point mounting or something but you would have to wonder about the poor buggers that have the old style.

Barry

Why would you consider buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Spoke to a mechanic in NT recently who had one in his workshop. He was extremely negative about the vehicle.

He was probably negative because of his lack of knowledge about the vehicle. But you are not always going to be in a city near a Jeep dealer when you need assistance.

I think you'll find most bush mechanics not being able to help most owners of family 4WDs that are less than 10 years old.

You'll find most have to be towed to the nearest large town or are sitting around waiting for parts to come from the dealer, no matter what brand it is.

Redback

The location of the mechanic is a town of about 10,000 people. The mechanic worked for a repco / aant authorised repair business. The next largest town is Darwin. It was towed to their business which is in the next nearest large town.

Being in the NT he is very familiar with repairing most brands of 4WDs including those less than 10 years old. Most people who own 4WDs in this area have a Toyota or Nissan. My point is that mechanics are familiar with those two makes of vehicles and in most large towns there is a Toyota and/or Nissan dealer.

10,000 pop i would class as a big town

The mechanics i refer to are in smaller towns and need to vary their needs to the masses, not everyone wants a Toyota or Nissan, why would you buy something you don't want, i know i wouldn't (although i have bought thing i thought i needed, lol).

Also alot of these manufacturers need to supply access to gear to fix modern 4WDs, because eventually all 4Bs will be electonic soon.

Progress is what it's called and like or not it's coming, most 4WD these days are pretty reliable and breakdowns are rare, but when it happens people tend to focus on the bad too much because it's not a Tojo or Nissan, and forget that this car has only broken down this once, just unlucky it was in a remote area.

Even tojo and nissan are hard to get parts for in the bush straight away because of the exspence of stocking parts these days.

Why would you consider buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
A few reasons I brought one,

1. Cause they have the best CRD engine on the market
2. Because there better on road than toyo or nissan and just as good off road.
3. The wife is happy to drive it but a cruiser or patrol is a pain in town.
4. They have leg room that toyo and nissan dont even come close to.
5. I like things with personalty and found toyo and nissan bland( but now I have to buy a boring japer)

But I do see your point, If your dumb arse mechanic can`t service it maybe you shouldn't buy one or get a better mechanic.

Cheers

Stu i'm with you mate, i get annoyed at the attitude of mechanics saying they can't work on it because it's not a Toyota or a Nissan, as far as i know mechanics don't train on specific cars when learning their craft.

The reason i asked Lucy why he bought his is because of him saying he was worried about taking it away from civilisation in case he had to be recovered for some reason.

Why buy it if your worried about something like that.

Not wrong Baz! I remember my oldman going on about when points gave way to cdi, he said; no way I would go off road with such electric gizmos and I will never buy one!

Probably if toyo or nissan released a ugly box wagon with crank start, points, air cooled, single gear and rope steering they would sell like hot cakes. Hey and maybe the mechanics that learnt their trade on a hills hoist could even fix em!

Cheers

He most probably considered it because he liked it.

Redback is also correct re the latest vehicles coming of the production lines.

Nearly all have Computer management of some degree and if so the Techs have to have the Analysing technology to attend to same.

I know for a fact that Chrysler only give their tech product to their accredited dealerships.

So if anybody else considers having a go - they can't. Or if they do poke around and cause a problem then there is no warranty. Simple as that.

I went through this about 2 months ago.. Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee/Commander or Diesel Pajero. Ended up with up Discovery 3. Anyhow... buy what you want. There is 4WD life beyond Toyota/Nissan.

It's your money.. whatever blows your hair back is right for you.

I like the Disco because it rides very gently just like my mates Roller.

Whatever you end up with... enjoy!!

Yes... I come from a time when there were only Land Rovers, Nissans (3 speed) and Toyota SWB (also 3 speed).

So things change and new 4WDs come along.

Enjoy.
