We plan on spending a few days at least at Baffle Creek on our way up to the Gulf in a few weeks. Fishing is the plan, along with crabbing and hopefully some prawns.
I'm aware of a couple of good commercial
camp grounds on the Creek, but as with all major trips, we are running a tight budget. Anyone aware of any good
bush camping spots in the area that are within a KM or two of a
boat ramp (or spot from which we can launch from the bank).
Some tips on fishing the area would also be apreciated as we haven't been there before.

Hi Norm
The only caravan park I'm aware of is Baffle Bobs which is on the baffle creek a fair way upstream. Not sure of
bush camping spots. If you have not been there before
check with the locals as the creek has a fair scattering of rocks and mudbars. We always fair better on prawns than yabbies though fishbait sometimes catch a mangrove jack. There are plenty of rays and turtles. Im not sure how its fishing at the moment as havent been there since Chistmas and it was pretty quiet then. Take sandfly repellent for around dusk/dawn

Kh, there is also Baffle
Creek Camp Stay. Heard good reports about it.
I've also head of camping (
bush camping I think) at or near
Walkers Crossing, but I don't know anything about it or how to find it ( or even if it really exists).

Yep, I'm a member there (same name). Did a search, but found nothing on
bush camping. Lots of recommendations for Baffle Bob's and Baffle
Creek Camp stay though.

Norm ,we passed thru BaffleCreek about 5 yrs ago and thought it would be a magic place for a week or two of fishing and camping , we then did a drive back up prior to Xmas before last , cut a long story short ,,you could not pay me to stay in Baffle Bobs
camp ground and the other supposed "park" with the camel rides looked like something out of a bombed Beuruit ,,,,,,,,,, if your after a good
camp ground up that way look at Miara c/van park on the Koloh river ,
free camping on opposite bank., all the crabs and fishing any one would want.

Found the Camel place. It is called Camelot Camel Park (includes camping and CP) and is at Rules Beach. We'll give that one a miss. Don't need the smell of camels while I'm having breakfast.
I found Miara on the web. Looks good and will look into it for the future, but I specifically want to fish Baffle on this trip. I've read a lot about it, but never been there

Norm - have you considered camping at
Lake Awoonga and going for the barra?
We caught 5 off the bank last trip, even with a power-boat/Skiing comp on the
dam on the Saturday.
Baffle creek is only a few k's south. There is a free
campsite beside the
bridge where Highway 1 crosses the Boyne river - with easy
boat launch, or there is the van park on the other side with
boat ramp (which backs onto the river tidal). Otherwise the van park at the
Dam..................Keith

Thanks Keith. We know Awoonga pretty
well. Up there just a couple of weeks ago in fact. We
camp at the
Boynedale Bush Camp up there, which is on the back end of the
lake South of Calliope.
Bit far to
camp around there and fish Baffle (about 100KM)? I like to
camp close to my
fishing spot, so if I want to hit the water before 6.00AM, I can.
Wife's first ever barra caught at Awoonga on last trip.

Hi,
I have just returned from Baffle Ck ....
well last month anyway. I stayed at Baffle Bob's why because it had a
boat ramp in the
camp grounds as I was not that keen to leave my trailer and vehicle at some of the bush ramps. The fishing was not flash to be honest and hard work, as with any place local knowledge is the key, (TRY AND GET THAT). The only info I got was to watch
the rock bars they are everywhere ............. It was like extracting teeth to get any info. I asked Bob at Baffle Creek his response ............ If your a good fisherman you will catch fish ...... at least I caught a few LOL.
I travelled up the river launching opposite the school (took the chance) found some good spots but alas no action for three boats was better at the mouth area. I would fish the edges of the weed banks or drift unweigted baits over the weed beds I feel this would work best. If you fish the mouth area live bait would be
well worth the effort but it does flow very fast so best would be hour either side of high or low tide. We caught all out fish on lures ........ slugs, RMG scorpions, squigies flick baits to name a few. Fish GT's, Cod, Flathead, Bream, Moses Perch and damn eels.
Baffle Bobs was $22 a night powered site I stayed 4 nights I was tenting it (DON"T
CAMP UNDER THE TREES) I found that out the hard way the trees drop a sticky substance overnight and now my tent is a bloody mess and needs a major clean to get the sh&t off, did not do the vehicle a lot of good either. NOT HAPPY.
It had amenities which are ok for what my son and I needed. Personally I would not go back to Baffle Bob's. I will say one thing no sandflies at Baffle Bobs where eleswhere you get a flogging from all accounts.
hope you have better luck that we did.

Thanks Brian. Good info. No Mangrove Jacks? Thought I'd give them a try. They are hard work to catch, but worth the effort.
If we stay at a
camp ground it will probably be the

Hi Norm
We took the Odyssey onto
the beach at Rules beach when we had the Disco (turn right onto
the beach not left) and camped behind the low dunes in front of the conservation park 50 mts from the river mouth, saw noone for 3 days. $8/night . Sand was easy to drive on. Tide times on a chalk board outside the last house at
the beach entrance.
You can then fish from
the beach at the mouth of the river or off the sand bars. We caught 2 flathead (40&60cm) and bream.
Short (nice) walk through the bush to the creek estuary for the crab pots.
Baffle Bob's looked ordinary in comparison to the isolation for 3 days, star gazing, nice sunrises and beach walks. Always some fisherman coming and going around the sth end so quite safe.

That's the one.
10mins to closest
boat ramp - you have to drive back to beach entrance (1km) and head back towards caravan pk - follow the signs.
I've got a 2mg little movie of the
camp site if you want me to email. see my profile for my website and then send an email from there and I'll reply.
