Just finished night shift in the emergency department at the hospital. Got called to the scene of a car accident at 0200, Saturday night.
23 year old bloke, breatho .087, speed around 130-140km/h in a suburban area, lost control of his Commodore and slammed into a stobie pole. Ever seen a stobie pole bend like a green twig?
Passenger's legs crushed but otherwise very, very, very, very lucky.
There will be a very angry judge when he steps into court. Not to mention the family of the passenger. If we had a prize for idiot of the week I know who would win.

Barnesy,
The problem is there's at least one EVERY week as you'd
well know.

That accident in Victoria the other night where the c/dore went under the bdouble was flirting with danger. Why on this earth would you want to drive (at speed) at night & under the influence with out any lights on is
well beyond my comprehension.
Sadly the driver & front passenger did not live & the one in the back
seat is alive still i hope. Why do they keep doing it.?
The
young must read about these car crashes but they still do it.
Is it the adreniline rush.?
Regards Bob.

90% of the time the car involved in these is a commodore.

Hmmmmm: Maybe not such a stupid comment champ................... There seems to be an inordinantly high representation of dunnydoors in these types of prangs!!!.......Certainly of late at any rate.
Maybe they are easier to steal (I don't pretend to know what % of these incidents involve stolen cars, but there are certainly "some")

Roachie I think its more a case of the Commodore being cheap to buy.
Hence so many
young people on "P" plates being able to afford them, particularly the V8's

Gerhardp1,
I think we are all entitled to put in a harmless comment aimed at no-one at all, without being blatantly abused by you or anyone else. I don't think "stupidist" is even a word unless your a four year old. Maybe your comment is sounding like the "most stupid" comment for the week then. Think before you type because we are all on the
forum to enjoy ourselves and not get into arguments with over opinionated people.

You are correct, it wasn't the stupidist, it was the most stupid.
But when you cast stones at people's spelling, it's wise to have your own
shop in order or you look even sillier, or most silly if you like.
"unless your a four year old" should be "unless you're a four year old".
Now you have 2 gongs instead of one.
Be happy, and post your Commodore comments on the Ford forums, where you will be praised. :)

If you read closely, I don't believe I had a go at your spelling. I had a go at what appears to be a non-existing word used. Seems like your reading skills are as good as my spelling skills. You've got to love "tit-for-tat".
2 gongs each.
(Wouldn't catch me alive on a ford
forum because I'm a Holden man) :-)

Barnsey, unless the victim is a close relative of the judge, it is unlikely that true justice will be done. I have seen a stobie pole (In SA they are made of concrete with 2 steel RSJ's cast into each side) that had been bent over at right angles about a foot off the ground.
I agree with other comments, you guys do a fantastic job. Thank you

Unfortunately Des is right.
The driver will be back on the road before the passenger is out of hospital!!! (assuming the driver didn't get hurt too badly, of course).
The carnage continues and "we" (ie: the community at large) seem powerles to do anything about it. All the advertising campaigns and visits to schools by paraplegic blokes who've suffered from stupid past acts etc, pale into insignificance once the
young driver/passenger has had a couple of baracardi breezers (or whatever those cruddy drinks are) and thinks the only thing they have to fear is cryptonite!!!!!
It's a bloody shame, cos it's the "others" (family of the deceased/mamed) who have to bear the REAL cost of these random acts of stupidity.

If the judges locked every crim up for eternity, soon there wouldn't be a need for judges and they'd be out of their high paying job.
Imagine that.

I'm glad now drugs can be tested for, on
the spot. I reckon the
young one's are right into a cocktail of drugs and alcohol.
I'm sure most of them are reasonable thinker's when not full of D&A.
Did you see that one in
Adelaide where the car in the car chase hit the guy on his way to work what a bloody mess, he didn't stand a chance.
Hate to be a copper haveing to give the family the news.

Don't forget the 19 yo who went the wrong way down an on ramp onto the Princess Freeway here in Melb last Thursday night/early Friday morning, he then drove for about 4 km's against the traffic before hitting a oncoming vehicle head on with two 30 odd yo men who were going to work. Killed them both instantly.
The 19 yo was in a critical condition, Police thought that he may have been intoxicated or under the influence of drugs. (Still waiting to hear the results of these tests)
Oh! and he was also driving a Commodore.

Granted the bloke is a wanker for driving at those speeds in a suburban area and especially at a speed to high for his ability, but hes hardly a drunk driver is he? Isnt that only .007 over the legal limit? Or has your level dropped? One more potatoe chip and he would have been under the limit.
Cheers

0.05 in SA and over is over. You don't have to be drunk to be a danger, just affected slightly and your judgement is impaired. Although I dare say he drives like that sober as
well.

.05. One more drink and he would've been close to double the limit! Granted he wasn't absolutely plastered, but all that probably meant is he didn't smash the car on the previous bend!
This reading is a standard developed for legal purposes. Someone with a .05 level may be significntly more cognitively impaired than someone else with double that level. A 23 year year old, inexperienced with driving and with alcohol, .087 is way too high.
A misconception with alcohol is that food will lower the blood level, not true. The only thing food does is helps stop you feeling so sick and possibly delays absorption of the alcohol slightly. The only thing that lowers alcohol level in the blood is time, about 1 standard drink per hour is what the body can metabolise and excrete.

Had two guys killed just near my place a few weeks ago when the drunk "lost it" , shot across the road and cannoned his Ford into a (very) large, thick tree. He (the driver) had had a skinful as
well. My only sympathy is to the poor families, as it was preventable.
My son came across it moments later and assisted where he could. He said the inside reeked of booze. Another 15-20 seconds and they could have taken him out as
well.
The driver is in court in March on a string of charges.
Youth is wasted on the
young!

Doesn't matter what brand of car nowadays all made of plastic, hitting anything at speed bound to disintegrate resulting in more death/serious injury

Charlie,
Whilst it would appear superficially that cars are made of plastic and are more dangerous now, it is in fact, the opposite. Cars now have air bags, crumple zones, passenger cells etc. I have been to hundreds of MVA's over the past 10 years and generally the old Holdens/Kingswoods, Fords and the like will actually split in two on impact, with the front end of the car totally separating from the rest. Generally with lighter (plastic) cars these days, as
well as the above, there is condiderably less 'mass' and therefore safer. Often the passenger compartment is relatively intact, in circumstances where one would expect otherwise.
This being said, of course there is nothing that will prevent serious injury or death of occupants in very high speed collisions with immovable objects such as trees etc... It has always happened, will always happen and as stated above is generally a variable mixture of alcohol, peer pressure, testosterone, drugs and inexperience.
I can tell you that there is much research going on regarding trauma (particularly traumatic brain injury) and hopefully this will benefit those unlucky enough to be the innocent (or other) victims of vehicle crashes.
Cheers,
Mark

Dont think it will ever stop. Being bullet proof is part of a
young guys makeup. Its almost a right of passage. No amount of education will stop these guys. Only maturity, if they make it that far, will make them stop and think. Sad I know. Lionel.

The accidents are a sad fact. But as seems to be mentioned in the background of all these conversations is the high horse power cars are all in the mix with youth and inexperience. The Government was willing to grasp the nettle with the bike riders which I have been all my driving life, and limit the horse power for "L" and "P" drivers. Even I thought it sucked at the time and yes I know the economic drawbacks but if you seriously limit the horse power may be we won't be getting mack 10 on the streets.

Haven't they started to get rid of those stobie poles in
Adelaide yet?
They in themselves are criminal.
(A cement pole with steel supports next to busy roads)
The laws of physics apply regardless of anything else - I don't care what you make cars from or how many airbags you put in them - A side on into a pole, tree, stobie pole etc at speed unleashes stupendous forces.
A head on at any speed over 80KPH (each car) is virtually unsurvivable.
You just cannot dissapate those forces.
I have been in two majors in my life and have been lucky enough to survive both. One was into a normal pole - head on - at about 70-80 KPH - IT HURT.
I was in a Volvo too.
I don't have the answers but I know there is only one way to stop the carnage - Avoid the occurrances. (Don't ask me how)
Perhaps more advanced
driver training at younger ages could help? I did an advanced course after the Volvo thing on a race track and found out what happended when I lost control without having to die in th process. Slowed me down I can tell you.
