Is there such a thing as a ONE MAN ROOFTOP TENT ?

I have a wheel on my full length roofrack and was wondering if anyone had any ideas about building a batchelor flat up there in the limited space left .

thanks ,

Willie .

Willie we used to travel with a bloke who had a rack bag with his swag inside it which he then unzipped and erected his swag up top.

Hi Willie:

Would a swag work?

I am also aware of a small Oztent (2.15m x 1.5m) that I have seen used as a rooftop tent. I don't know what room you have to work in up there on your roof rack.

I have had 2 rooftop tents over the last few years, one on a Toyota (full length roofrack) which i used to keep a spare wheel on and one on my current Nissan which although it is not on a full length rack (cant afford one right now) so I am using 2 Rhino bars BUT if I had a full length I could still put up a spare wheel and whatever and have the rooftop

If you get the folding style rooftop they only take up 1.2mtr of the 2.5mtr roof area

PLENTY of room left over for wheel etc

Got to this e-bay website and scroll down to the photos at bottom of page.
it shows the Rooftop in place using the 2 rhino bars as I have done but you can see how little roof area it requires - whiltsit is not a 'true' one man tent I an 6'3" and gotta admit I enjoy the xtra room when compared to sleeping in a swag

Hi KiwiAngler ....................

Have been looking at these with more than a passing interest myself.
On the surface they look great ........... nice and simple to erect, weight only
55 kgs, can be angled any which way on top of my camping trailer and still leave room for 'other bits' to be carried on top.
And the pricing is very competitive, relative to the alternate roof-tops. I see some have sold on eBay at around $680 ........... gotta love that !!

And, as with you, .... ' I am 6'1" and gotta admit I enjoy the xtra room when compared to sleeping in a swag !!'

Which thusly leads me to assume you already have one ???

If so ............. could you kindly give an idea of how you find it for quality, design, ease of use, etc. ...... is the area that overhangs the trailer when opened up reasonably stable, with only the ladder to support it ? And how do you find the internal height ?? OK for us tall 'uns ??

I would probably be mounting it on the front section, [two UniStrut bars,] of my trailer [as per rig pix,] as the rear lid section is hinged midway to lift up.

Regards ........ Pedro

Hey Pedro

Yes I do have one of those as shown on e-bay I also used to have a Howling Moon.

Originally I first came in contact with RoofTop Tents when I was touring through South Africa (where they were REALLY needed - Lions eat Humans-))

All in al I have been using rooftops tents for about 8 years and wouldnt be without one

The one I have purchased off e-bay looks fine, stitching and quality all look fine and even if it isnt 100% as good as the OpenSky, Howling Moon etc you could replace it 2 or 3 times for the cost and still be ahead :-)

The section that is supported by the ladder is also supported by the hinge and I have had no issues

As for the 'head room' you really dont notice it as you dont stand up in the tent like you would in a conventional tent.
You basically climb up the ladder and enter the tent on your hands and kness and thats about it - you open up your sleeping bag (which you store inside the tent) and go to sleepy byes :-)) - remember to point percy at the porclain before retiring or alternatively take a empty bottle - if you know what I mean :-))

I have seen the tents mounted to a trailer but not sure how they account for the ladder not being there - perhaps others on the site who have mounted rootops on tralers can answer.

I cannot recommend Roof Top Tents more - but then again I am a convert :-)

Many thanx ....................

Just what I wanted to hear ......... I accept their limitations but the benefits to me are greater!
And as far as the empty bottle trick .... the brother used to do that [how gross!]
and once [ONLY ONCE ] inadvertantly mixed up his bottle of Lemonade with it ............ now cured of taking soft drinks to bed forever, no matter how thirsty he gets!!

Whilst no lions here
[and, so far, no rumours of an escaped cougar/panther/jaguar from the last travelling circus ??] scorpions and canetoads often pay sneak visits. The missus is somewhat intolerant [and loud] of these visitors .........

Now, just need to work out how to get one from Melb to Cairns/Weipa without incurring a extra $300 cost ??????????????

Hi Willie

At the last show I went to at Penrith someone had a little nylon on that weighed like nothing and it just popped up, it was just a one man job and great for overnight, it might have even been at one of the fishing shops.

Sorry I can not help you with a link, maybe try Google.

Have fun

Craig
