Hi all, just a quick question. Does the entire transfer case need to be removed from the gearbox to replace the front output shaft seal on a 2001 standard 100 series landcruiser? I have just taken my vehicle up the road for this job to be done and they have told me that this is the case, but I was under the impression that only the front cover needed removing.
With thanks, Charlie.

It looks like it (Gregory's manual).

The Front Extension Housing does need to be dismantled at least - it looks like you need a puller to remove the drive hub from the front output shaft and there would be no room for that if you don't remove the whole transfer case.

If he is talking about the seal on the gearbox output shaft then yes. This seal was prone to failure on the older 'Cruisers.
What are the symptoms?
If it is oil transfer past the seal and into the gearbox, you can buy a hose (from Pirtek for example) that fits into the fillers of both the transfer and gearbox to allow the oil to run back, no need to replace the seal.
