Started to get a musty smell in the cabin recently so today I lifted the vinyl matting under the passenger side
well and found the insulation backing soaking wet and the wiring loom sitting in a nice
pool of water down the side!
I have scrapped all the soaked backing off the vinyl and dried out everything.
Both floor grommets are in place and okay. On further investigation I popped the small hard plastic round cover (about 60mm dia) from the hole in the passenger floor just as the floor slopes up at the front. It allows access to a chassis bolt. You can see into a small
well. Put your finger in and there is water sitting there. It must seep into the passenger floor somehow.
Soaked it up but need to find out where it's coming from.
Anyone had this before?
Cheers
John

In my experience, the most common source of water getting in is via the windscreen seal. Can be very hard to locate, as the water often runs a fair distance around the seal before trickling down into the foot
well.
A leak problem I had in my Patrol only happened in downpours. Nissan tried to find it during warranty, but in the end reckoned that they might have to take out the dashboard, at my expense. I baulked. Eventually found it a year or so later when I changed the windscreen; there was a 1cm gap in the sealant.
Try using a high pressure hose around the windscreen seals, while someone watches for water trickling under the dash.

From experience
check that the sealant is inserted on the outside of screen , particularly at top.
If none there this can cause a leak.

Also sprinkle some talcum powder around the inside before you go blasting the seals and that will show up even the smallest leak!

Check your door drain plugs, could be blocked, letting water to leakunder your
door linings.

John, I think I would replace the plastic cover you saw with a rubber grommet.
Quite often the plastic types just don't seal properly.

John
Had a similar problem very recently in my troopy.
Found it was a large gash in a grommet in the fire wall on the passenger side.
At first I was convinced it was the windscreen.
Try checking the two holes (There is a technical term) on the bottome part of the frame the rubber sits in. Sometimes these are blocked. The windscreen man checked
mine when the screen was replaced.
They are about equal distance from each side of the screen. You may be able to get to them by carefully lifting the rubber.

Thks all
Found it.
Some bloody sparky in the past has removed a loom gromet through the firewall so when it rains or I clean it runs down the loom straight into the
well. Mungrel.
Where's that tube of silicone...

Hi, RovingOz ..............
Exactly the same problem on my Model 75 Troopy ......... some tit recently installed a dual battery set-up in the rear of the Troopy and ran the wiring [HD] through the same grommet and tore the bottom half .......... rain or washing did the same as yours. Local Smash Repairer found it straight away and plugged it with "some black faeces !" Worked like a charm .
And I'll not be doing my own wiring again ................ damnnnnnnnnn !!

RovingOz,
With 80 series cruisers they have a dry seal meaning the rubber mould is placed around the screen and then its popped into the windscreen frame, unlike some cars where sealant (hot glue) is used to hold the screen in place. From what i have been told it is to avoid cracking windscreens when the body flexes and to make replacement easier. When I had a new screen put in on my cruiser O'Briens told me that. They also said to always insist on a genuine Toyota Seal as opposed to the aftermarket ones which are prone to leaking. Toyota have the chrome strip all the way around, aftermarket ones do not..
Mind you down here in Vic i reckon we we could cut the roofs of our cars as rain is only a distant memory!
