Have read/heard somewhere that in some models they have a weak shaft linking the g/box to transfer? and the spline strips leaving you with no drive.
If this is the case, which models are effected ?
Sorry to have so little details but those in the know will know.

The main shaft problem is common with 75 series, supposedly fixed with later models.
100 series NA diesels do have a history of gearbox problems, I know of a couple of owners that are on the third box! as apparently they have the same gearbox as a Prado and it is obviously not heavy enough for the job.
The turbo's and 70 series have the heavier box, can't remember the model numbers.
Do a search as it has been discussed before.

Hi Nick
There isn't a problem in the 100 series its the 75 and 78/79 series non turbo models, The problem with the 75 series was using and towing in 5th under 100kmp it would load up the gearbox and wear the hardening off the shaft between the gearbox and transfer needing a new shaft and overhaul.
The 78/79 series they split the and joined them together with a sleeve as thick as al foil hence the shaft stripping, Toyota have now made a new rear shaft and much thicker sleeve one piece, I needed to do this last year on my 78 series with just a transfer gasket and seal kit, The other gearbox rebuild is the old seal between the gearbox and transfer giving way and filling the transfer full off oil leaving the gearbox empty,My fault I thought they fixed it the gearbox on my workshop bench proves they didn't.

I have a 78/79 series late 1999 model thats done a fair amount of heavy towing and has done 165000k. This year i'm planning a trip into some fairly remote areas and after reading some of the posts re.the output shaft problems have been a bit concerned. I thought i would take steps to have a stronger shaft fitted but my local Toyota dealer new nothing about the problem. Can anyone suggest somone who is familiar with and can do this mod in Western Vic?
Cheers Tony

Ithink you will find the problem was with the 78/79 series non turbo diesels between 2000 and 2003 after which they went back to the heavier shaft.Mine unfortunately is a 2001 model but have had no problem yet doing 146000kms. but amthinking of changing the shaft just in case--about $1000.

Hi Nick
I spoke to a Toyota mechanic today and he said that the 100 series has the same twin shaft set up as the78-79 series but in a different configuration and he hasn't seen the same problem as the 78-79 series to date.
cheers Steve
