Hey mate- I meant to swing past on monday but was crook as after my 10 litres of pina coladas at moore river and a concert sunday.

You need to turn NMEA on on the GPS- check thru the menus on the GPS and try that. In Moving map menu, open the moving map control and show NMEA in and out then start NMEA communication. If you at least get data you can speak with the GPS.

If it is the GPS that cant do NMEA, it might be worth looking at the USB GPS's they have in the shop here.

You can also run an NMEA simulator on Ozi- might be worth having a play with that and see how you go. For my moving map to work, I needed to have a GPS fix, good batteries and patience. After a few walks up n down the drive it came to life.

Davoe.Dont use my Etrex for movingmap but just had a look at it. Benspoon might be right. Try Menu, setup, interface, garmin, nmea. dont if it will work . only use mine to find my way back to the wagon when I go walking through the bush.
Might help Brian

My etrex works perfectly with moving map. If you are using a serial to USB adapter you will need to determine which port the GPS is on. This can be found in the Device Manager.

Make sure in the Ozi configuration that you choose the right port in the COM section on the configuration page. Mine doesnt have Garmin USB activated nor the PVT for Garmin. (Although if you do use this then you dont have to change the GPS interface from NMEA to Garmin as mentioned above to upload and download waypoints, routes etc)

You could always just randomly choose the COM ports and see if it works. It's likely that a USB to serial adapter will choose a low numbered port so it would only take a few guesses.

Daveo, I agree with Wayne - sounds like the laptop doesn't know which com port has the etrex on it. Could also be that the USB to serial adaptor isn't behaving - as Wayne says, have a look in device manager and check that you have a com port and its number, then tell OE about it using OE's file|configuration. Suggest configure OE to Garmin etrex, rather than NMEA, though that would probably work ok too.

We used an Etrex very successfully, till we found its display was fading due to being too hot sitting on the dash looking up through the windscreen. It's now been replaced with a cheap mouse style gps with no display.

yea i have figured it works on com port4 i am able to download track and waypoints. I am pretty over it at the moment as it has trouble figuring out what path to find maps i have mucked around with the pathways in the configuration settings and now i cant open any maps. These things arnt freindly at all to those with only basic computer knowledge

Davoe,
if as you say you can transfer data (ie waypoints ect) to & fro from laptop to GPS then check your NMEA Upload/Download boardrate configeration in OziExplorer & the baud transfer rate of your connection port on your computer. If you are using USB2 comms ports it will usually be 9600 whereas the default setting in OziExplorer is 4800. If it is USB1.0 then the setting is 4800 is this works at a slower transfer rate. You require these settings to be the same so the NMEA can transfer data.
To find the baudrate comms port setting (do this with everything connected) on your computer, go into MY Computer-Properties-Hardware-Device Manager-Ports(Comms &LPT)-Select the comms port connected to your GPS-Properties-Port Settings. You will see the baudrate displayed in the top window. Make sure the setting in OziExplorer for NMEA is the same. When transferring data from GPS to laptop such as waypoints, routes ect the NMEA setup is not used.
When the Moving Map is working correctly & the NMEA is transferring data, you will see the blue & green indicators flashing on the bottom left side of the screen. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Another quirk is that the GPS must be switched OFF until you have Ozi up and running. Then switch GPS on and once you have enough Satellites go to Moving Map and then Start NMEA

I just remembered something- I used the USB to serial adaptor in both your back USB ports when setting up - When you try it in a different port chances are it will change the com number. To check what number it is currently, hold the windows logo and press the "pause-break" key. Click Hardware > device manager > expand ports and it will show in there (Com 5 from memory)

Go back to Ozi and set the com number in File > Configuration > COM tab.

At the end of the day, if you can still download your tracks and waypoints from GPS to Ozi, it can communicate and sounds like an NMEA or baud problem. From memory your GPS baud is set to 4800
