What are Mickey Thompson ATZ's like and does anyone run these. I currently run Coopers ATRs and very happy with them, but will be looking at buying some new tyres very soon and have spotted these at what seems a very good price. Are they a similar tyre ? any feedback welcome.

Brian,
We have started to change over to their MTX tyres on our Troopy. These, and the ATZ's have a high (E) load rating. The MTX are rated as 10 ply. We've been pleased with them for off road use and they aren't noticeably noisey on bitumen.
One silly issue with them - So far we've fitted only two - on the back. They are guaranteed for 70,000 km, BUT only if you have a wheel alignment every 10,000 km. The cost of wheel alignments will far outweigh the replacement cost, and in any case I've never heard of an alignment for the rear
wheels!

John,
The coopers are the same with there warranty now as
well. It dosent really cost a gerat deal. My cooper st's are guaranteed for 80K and I have to get my book stamped by tyrepower every 10K. It costs me $22 for a rotation and ballance(I have 6 tyres with the two on the back comming in to the circle). The cost of the tyres is close to $300 a corner. I have 6 which equals 120k guarantee. $22 by 12 equals $264 which is less than the cost of one new tyre. I use my car regulary off road and would normally have them ballanced every 15k or so any way. So I recon its not to bad a deal.
Thats my thoughts

Hi Matt
Just curious- have Cooper changed their warranty now that it's covered 'off the blacktop'. It used to be that tyres (sorry TIRES) were only covered if in certain metropolitan areas???

I get my tyres rotated and balanced every 5000 (overkill yes i guess) but they are great are are lasting very
well. I will say this round they will be done at 10000 as the tyre guy said don't waste your money do every 10000 unless there is a problem.
The reason I was asking the question about the Micky Thompsons is i have found some for sale with just over 5000klms and are about $160 each, are fair bit down on new price albeit no warranty as 2nd hand.
I was currently looking at getting 2 new coopers to make 6 for my vehicle for when i go west later this year, which i guess the cost will be around the $500.00 mark but at least they will be the same as what I have now. Currently
mine have done 40000 - 45000 and look great with plenty of tread.
To get the micky Thompsons i would then have to use 2 coopers as my spares. I just figured the cost was a fair sort of saving.
I'm not real sure of the issue of mixing different brands, i just figured thats its not real flash idea unless the rolling distance is the same.
