Has any one had experience with the cheaper roof top boxes avaliable from K-Mart/Big W as opposed to the Thule/Rhino ones. It will only be on top of the car (not the tojo) so not as much vibrations.

thanks

Steve..

Well.. I've got a Thule (I have looked at the K Mart one and it doesn't look all that hot) and it's great.

Has been on many highway trips and smooth dirt roads on the 4x4 and I love it. You literally wouldn't know it's there. In fact SWMBO opened the sunroof to be sure we hadn't lost it.

It is totally waterproof and makes SFA to fuel consumption.

Go for one.. you won't look back.
Cheers

I've had a Kmart $100 one for about one year and it's fine. It's done some hard 4WDing in the High Country and lots of desert and highway work. I spent a week following my mate in the SA deserts (his vehicle isn't sealed against dust - mine is) and some dust got into it but nothing too bad.

The front catch is rubbish, replace it immediately or _always_ use a tie down strap around the front of the box - which I do on bush trips anyway.

Makes no wind noise and there is no difference in fuel consumption, to my surprise.

I put a length of draught excluder around the rim of mine to help the dust issue. A very useful box, I will recommend it.

^^^^^^ What he said! ^^^^^^

Plus a ute tonneau style elastic loop & button catch dead centre in the front is a good idea, as they do flex even with a strap.

Hi Mike,

It is with great trepidation that I posted below my experience with the KMart box that wasn't so good, into a thread in which you are posting a contrary opinion. I really really hope that neither of our Qld combatants in the autoelectrics game start selling rooftop boxes!

All the best

We elected to buy a Thule after shopping around. The company we bought it off used to rent top boxes out and they told me the only box they never had problems with was the Thule. We have done 15,000 kms with ours including a trip to Cape York. I was a bit sceptical about the ability of the quick release U bolts holding it on but we have never had to touch them once fitted. The box does not leak water or dust. I would not hesitate in recommending Thule for off road work. I could imagine nothing worse than finding it full of water or dust after a trip or it not holding up to the pounding of 1 million corrugations on the Cape York trip.

Regards
Richard

My Kmart one has had a similar life - how much did you pay for the Thule?

My next door neighbours had an el-cheapo on top of the commodore wagon and the lid let go on the Hume Highway.

They retrieved and then used tape and octopus straps to secure.

Cheap is dear!!! Me thinks

I pulled a guy over last year in the NT on the way to Katherine who had a cheaper version. It had opened up and was acting like an air brake. He lost all his stuff, the lid was broken and his pride was slightly tarnished. I must agree you get what you pay for.

We had the KMart one but found it too small for a family, it leaked dust & water as it gaped at the front, needed straps to keep it closed and I spent an extra $35 buying U-bolts to fit around the Rhino bars. Returned it after a trip to the Flinders Ranges and bought a Thule of eBay for three times the price ($350), three and half times the volume and infinitely more peace of mind.
