Electric car goes offshore

An engineer has developed an electric car in his back yard that is claimed 0-100kmh in 7 seconds, 250-300km on one charge and $100 a year to run. Site Link

Apparently he couldn't get any funding to help with development or even obtain permission to test drive on public roads.

He also couldn't find a company in Australia to build his car. So what does he do? Take himself, his prototypes and all of his tools to the UK where he has a contract for a production of 100 units.

I thought we were the clever country? Shouldn't we be pushing companies to back these types of innovative blokes to develop cars that dont need dinofuel?

Who would lose out by less oil being sold?

Stevie Wonder has more foresight than the fools we have in Government, or those waiting their turn to get their snouts in the trough.

Don't blame 'the Government' all the time. A simple truth is we have no entrepreneurs or businessmen with balls either. That is why we will continue to follow the world and not lead - in any way !!!!

I rarely agree with you Leroy but "Who killed the electric car" was on TV late last year & was amazing to see how the American Government gave insentives to the car company's to develop an electric car only to shut the program down 3 years later & abandon it all together despite them working perfectly. To this day they still have a car park with a solar charging station in LA (?) for the cars but only one (in the world) is left as he refused to hand it back when the 3 year lease expired & despite them all working fine the rest were put through the crusher. Not much doubt there......just a conspiricy between the oil companies & the Government who needed to be seen doing something about the energy crisis without losing those all important $$$$ ;-)
Cheers Craig.............

LOL "Politicns with foresight and vision - 0 " I don't think I've ever questioned that statement.

If you bother to read my original reply it was more in the vein of why do people always take the easy way out and blame 'the Government'. Are you all so helpless and incapable of accepting responsibility that you continue to blame 'the Government' for everything ? That's exactly what is wrong with society today. Too many bludgers that expect everything to be done for them and they can't be held responsible for anything. Oxygen thieves we can well do without.

Now I'm offended. Maybe you generalize a little too much. I don't blame the government for everything just their stupidity and their willingness to push the barrow of big business or foriegn governments. And if Ralph is too busy to comment ask David Hicks or the residents of Cronulla or...

Geez Gramps, civilizations don't die by murder or suicide... more likely ineptitude and greed.

Vuduguru,

We get the Government we deserve. Remember, WE voted the current one in with a majority in both Houses.

David Hicks/Cronulla/Iraq etc etc etc - we all have our own opinions and I don't want to get into them on this forum.

Vuduguru,

Aaaah but the 'majority' did hahahahaha. Your feeble "I did'nt vote for" excuse would not go down well in today's "team orientated" business world. The team's decision is paramount. Individuals need to suck it up and get on with the team's agenda LOL

I often call the majority, sheep, that's my generalization. Funnily enough I work as Team Leader for a "big" business and I'm not one for sucking it up. So back to where we started. I concur with Jack and Leroy. The government is an ass or if you prefer, baaaaa.

Always dangerous to consider yourself above the 'sheep'. Sounds like your 'big business' is just another part of the public service, the biggest business in the country. So that explains your position.

The reason this guy got no goverment assistance is pretty damned obvious to me, he is not 1) a single female with 5 children under 5 all to different fathers, 2) he is not of Aboriginal or Torres straight islander origins 3) he did not make a large enough donation to the correct political party...

Surely if his claims are true this car will have a good chance of success. This isn't a hybrid, it's 100% electric. How am I supposed to check it out for myself?

lots of info on electic car conversions etc on the net. Also do searches on the GM EV1 and even more distubing the the purchase of the nickel metal hydride battery patent by Cheveron in the USA who sued panasonic for manufacturing batterings for the Toyota RAV4 Electric car in the USA.
I have pondered converting a car to electric for the city runs.

Maybe the problem in Oz is the length of flex with 3 pin plugs to get from one powerpoint to the next. Distances in UK are shorter but even then I'd have thought the flexes would get tangled up.

$100 / yr to run ? Thats just the petrol bill for the landcruiser trailering it to the next dumb journo that doesnt check the facts properly. And pigs will fly comes to mind also!
Some of those solar car racers might one day get close -- but they can cost a few million each at present.
Land speed records were held by electric cars around the turn of the last century
its a pity they didnt have the advantage of 100 years continuous development - as given to our current internal combustion engined vehicles.

Batteries are finally improving as is the cost of solar cells which together with an on board back -up generator and electric charger set up may give hope for small city type vehicles in the future. I would consider one provided it had a safety crash frame etc. Cant see one appearing that will match the $14990 small cars at present. At $40k the prius hybrid is also a little expensive ?

Barnsey.
I would love to think this was true.
If this blokes story was true the media would be able to drive it on a private track but that has not happened, There are some laws of physics to consider, To travel x k,s you need y energy, to get that energy in a battery it will have a mass of z kilo's, to accelerate z kilo's to 100k's in 7 seconds needs a lot of power, a lot of power requires a lot of battery. I don't know the numbers for this car, but the answer is probably the same reason as no one will back it, it may be similar to Fitche and Hyclones. Eric.

Remember Joh's govt backing of that water-powered car in Qld back in the 80's.... prob not on the road today for the same reason. Don't think the oil companies had anything to do with that one's demise.
The figures quoted on that news item on TV just didn't really add up. Perhaps this guy's run out of goodwill and govt money in this country and now finding another sucker country to run to for assistance. Just a thought....

It's a pity that we don't get the full story and reasons why this vehicle isn't being accepted.
According to 'the inventor' ....'since he brought the project to Australia from Malaysia three years ago, it has failed to attract any interest from local industry.'

Why no (apparent) interest from Malaysian industry. I always thought they were pretty innovative in developing products.

Why no interest from local industry? Perhaps the concept, the engineering, the electrical etc are just not up to scratch. Who knows. Perhaps it's a lemon ! The article is obviously short on such info.

You can't test drive it on public roads because it doesn't comply with Australian Design Rules. I guess that's the same reason so called 'monkey bikes' are not permitted to be registered or driven on roads - they just don't comply with safety requirements.

But a spokeswoman for Innovation Minister John Brumby said the Government was not aware of any requests for support. "As far as the Government is aware, this particular company has never sought formal assistance from the Government.

This guy is obviously doing something wrong in the way he has gone about developing/promoting his vehicle. Perhaps he really needs a good PR man to create interest which (if the product was any good) would in turn create demand.

Let's just wait and see how long before the 100 cars he's contracted to build appear.

I'm guessing we will never see them.

These magical cars keep appearing out of the never never and just as quickly go back there.

However! If there are enough concerned supporters who have faith, surely they can all contribute through a share buying scheme to get the vehicle developed in Australia and become overnight multi millionaires.
