According to my new weaco digital fridge/ambient thermometer unit the digital readout of my 40 engel reads a fair bit higher (not as cold temps). In an empty fridge I placed waeco probe in several positions but the fridge cabinets readouts were always higher(warmer mostly by 3 deg). Weaco unit is supposed to be accurate to -+1C so the I'll go with it, though in my heart i believe the engel readout.
I bought the weaco unit as it had a long lead and can monitor temps in car whilst on long trips.
anyone else believe their engel readout!

i think you will find that the digital reading is the "average" not the temperature at a specific time.
I use a Waeco probe and it gives current, high and low which is much better than just seeing the "average"

Read the fine print next to the digital display on the engel.
They don't claim to be accurate, only claiming to provide an indication of temperature. FWIW I have found ours to be consistently 3 degrees higher than measured with a variety of probed thermometers

Does it really matter as long as the beer satays cold and the meat fresh ??

Do you use peanuts or beer nuts in the satay sauce?

The Waeco one is probably like the Engel one. A unit found from an overseas source that was happy to screen print their label on it for an order for 10,000 units.
They use a thermister as a sensor usually, and will only be as accurate as the quality of the thermister they purchased.
Also the thermisters generally have a band in which they are reasonably accurate and the accuracy tapers away as you move further in temp range from the designed ideal.
So therefore it depends a little whether it was specifically designed for use in a fridge and around the -5/+5 deg mark, in which case it will be at its most accurate there, or for measuring inside and outside ambient temps (which is what most of the dual temp units are actually manufactured for) in which case they will be a little more accurate at what ever the manufacturer considered the median temp would be for such a unit, but probably/possibly 20°C or so.
A good article on different temp measurement methods can be found here Site Link
(try googling thermister or thermistor)

I use a small mechanical dial gauge type thermometer in my engel as
mine does`nt have a digital readout. It just hooks on to the basket inside the fridge, and no batteries needed. cost about $10.Get them from kitchenware shops. I reckon it would be more accurate than digital ones, and you don`t need wires hanging out of the fridge.

I just use the old tried and tested method, if the beer's cold the fridge is set right. But you have to keep checking. That's why there's so many beers in the carton.

I have 50L Waeco fridge ,still under warranty,it was working OK,till I switched off for a period of couple of months, and then after restart , LCD display starts showing erratical digits,so ,I ask mob in
Melbourne to fix it ,so far it collects the dust ,at Battery World Tullamarine since four weeks ago,and I complaint to Waeco on couple of occasions, because they sent wrong part on two occasions,f..good service, sounds familiare.Adamant
