Yep..... did it again... yes again!
Did this once to my 720 ute [luv my hilux now]..
Filled the diesel tank with unleaded.... My wife's hilux. Luckily I noticed what I had done as I hung up the nozzle.
And I had been so happy at how Gippsland diesel had finally come down to near
Melbourne prices!...... So of course filled up from near empty.
Went in and paid and moved away from the bowser to have a think....
Last time [720ute], I called the RACV who towed me, dumped the fuel and towed me back to the petrol station....
Didn't want to waste the fuel, so went into
shop and bought all their jerry cans and found a bit of hose. Syphoned off the fuel and filled her again.
Now I have 50 litres of unleaded with about 15% to 20% diesel. What can I use this mix for? Tried a bit in the chainsaw... not running so nice now!
BTW..... week later was T-boned driving the same hilux.... but that's another story.
Any suggestions for diesel/unleaded mix?
Cheers Royce

you could always use it little by little to winterise your diesel.

Find a local rural fire brigade and donate it to them, they use a diesel /petrol mix in their fire lighters that they use in country areas when doing controlled burns and back burning.

Gooday,
Yes have had the same unhappy experience approx 18 Mths ago in
Esperance WA, only discovered when i went to pay, FULL tank.
Pushed it off driveway, Jeep 2.7L Diesel 2003, no drain plug, cannot get siphon hose into tank, tried undoing a pipe, no joy, getting at it like getting into Guantanamo Bay.
Finally after 2 hours, Sat PM , Jeep assist sent tilt tray, loaded on back, took us back to to Caravan Park, unload, sat & sulked till dark. Next morning tried to rent car for day, Fathers Day, only one place out of 3 returned message I left at 8-30 am, rang back after an hour, finally came with EB Falcon ex Taxi from local "Arthur Daly", at 11-00am, good for age, only 650,000km on clock, did touring for rest of day. Next morning Tilt Tray returns at 7-00 am, took it to 4wd
shop, went there aftewards, they had to pull tow bar & rear panel off to remove fuel tank to drain, finished job by lunchtime, great bunch of blokes, $150-00 for tilt tray travels, $450 for tank operation, plus $104 of super unleaded wich I donated to Esp 4WD.
Took me months to get over my stupidity, now really double
check before I put the nozzle in the tank.
Still love
Esperance, Mortimers the best Hardware Store you could find.
Cheers,
Boroma604.

Add about 33% old sump oil and you should have enough
camp fire lighting fluid for the next 50 years :)

I haven't done it yet (touch wood). What happens if you drive off without realising what you've done? Has anyone done that?

Destroyed engine. I think basically because it overheats due to friction.. or at least due to the lack of lubrication provided by the diesel which is a light oil.
I did however drive about 100 meters...... trusting that there was still enough in the lines to do so safely.

G'day
I've done this also, about 50/50 mix I reckon. I drove till I lost all power, the engine was still running, it looked like it was trying to jump out the car. At this stage I didn't know why it had stopped. A fella stopped to help and when he asked if I had already checked the spark plugs, I told it was a diesel. He said it doesn't smell much like diesel. I clearly remembered filling up with unleaded. I changed over to the over tank (full of Diesel) it started straight away and has been fine ever since.

Filled my tank from almost empty 18 months ago. Drove about 2 km and it stopped and wouldn't start. Finally realised what I'd done. RACV, tilt tray, drain, refill. Done another 45,000km since. No problems. Hilux 3ltr turbo.

I saw a bloke in a nice 80 series T/D drive in at
Parkes and proceed to fill up. I didn't take much notice and was chatting away to him when I noticed the unleaded hose in his hand. Boy was he fuming......"bloody servos" he said, "don't know why they put the two fuels at the same bowser, that's the second time I've done this" luckily for him he hadn't started filling the smaller second tank and was able to still drive until he could find a spot to dump the main tank of unleaded. I could'nt stop laughing to myself at his attempt to blame someone else for his actions.
I don't know, but I would have thought small amounts of your "special blend" in an unleaded vehicle would be OK??? (little bits each tankfull). Maybe someone with knowledge on this could verify if this is the case or not.
Cheers, Trevor.

I agree with him in a way - with only one diesel bowser in many stations around here, but petrol alongside, I often have to wait while someone finishes getting unleaded, when the other all-petrol lanes are empty. Diesel pumps should be stand-alone, with the lane marked as diesel.
Cheers

Royce, you don't say if you have a petrol vehicle but it could add as upper cylinder lubricant at the rate of part of a jerry can per tank full. The chainsaw doesn't run too
well as you already found, but I reckon it needs more dilution to work
well.
We had an employee fill a tractor tank with 200 litres of petrol once. Sent him back to Europe to wreck engines there.

I drove the GQ
home from Ferntree gully road and springy road one day, couldnt understand why the fuel was so cheap until I looked and some sperm had changed all the nozzles roud on the pump - it was 3ish am, and was going for over 24hrs at work already..
ended up with bit more than 50% petrol in it, and fairly cruised
home very slowly... dumped it out the next morning, and rolled into the servo.. didnt even change filters.
had no bad effects, its still going now!

Not half as much fun as seeing a Petrol Car with Dieso in it.... boy do they blow smoke. Witness the after affects of some poor lass who put Diesel in a Japanese lunchbox at a servo one day.... don't think the engine was worth much after that....
