Hi All was wondering if anyone out there could help me find out what is wrong with my 1990 80 seris crusier, other than the fact that its a lemon.
Over the last 12 months it has had a brand new head, all hoses repalced .starter motor and alternator re coed. New power steering pump pump and lpg mixer and Its just had new plugs and leads and a tune up.
My prob is it is running like a pig i can get it up to 80 km with effort on petrol and about 40km on gas. I can only go to third gear in gas . There is heaps of backfiring and it stinks of petrol or gas. any help would be great thanks in advance

If you only had the problem on petrol it could be too much fuel (too rich and most likely carby problems).
If you only had the problem on gas it could be too lean (a lean gas mixture will backfire)
Because you have the problem on both petrol and gas I would start looking at all things electrical. Areas that could either cause no or low spark or spark at the wrong time like a crack in your distibutor cap.
I am no mechanic though and there will be others on this site with much more knowledge than me. Good luck in finding the problem.

Cheers,
Brett

Do a compressoin test also. Maybe you have a damaged valve head or a crack somewhere. Bit hard to help more without hearing the thing run. Good luck.

Compession test showed no probs and the motor sounds good its just gutless and idles very rough. I dont think the head is the prob as it was replaced with a brand new one a few months ago and i had the valve changed to gas valves. But i have noticed when i run it on gas the area near the gas mixer thing gets very hot, so hot the water in the window washer bottle was steaming

Sounds to me you need to get the thing tuned properly. Find a reputable gas mechanic so he can put it on his analyser to see what & why it is doing what it is doing. It is the only way to go.Having said this there are lpg mechanics & there are the wanna be's.Good luck in sourcing your problem.

Sounds like you may be trying to run on gas and petrol at the same time. If yours is like mine you will find that there are solenoids that isolate the gas and petrol from each other. Perhaps you should have these checked out.

Are you in , or near Brisbane, if so I can recommend Scott at Metropolitan Autogas.

Telephone 07 32560333

He is excellent and solved problems I had with backfiring on 80 series, a lot of which resulted from poor intallation and replacement with non genuine parts.

I would give him a ring anyway and he may have some suggestions for you. Also give him the brand of LPG you are using

Get some one to check your valve timing, some times a crank or cam sprocket can ware on the key way or dowl and cause incorrect valve timing which will give these symptoms, or the timing may have been set incorrectly,
to test for a worn cam or crank sprocket, remove the dist cap and turn the engine clock wise and anti clock wise at the crank and notice the amount of movement before the rotor button moves.
Hope this helps.

Its only a lemon because something is wrong that hsnt been diagnosed yet. Is it efi or carbi, that will depend if it is auto or manual...from there, when was the problem first exibited? did u buy it with gas already?
Hot mixer would only be when running on petrol right?? should be cold when converting the gas.
Valve timing might be the culpret...more like however, running rich on both fuels either by leakey valves...or bad wiring...take it to someone who owns a cruiser and is a mechanic.
