Hi Beam Wire

Hi,

I am trying to install some IPF 800 spot lights to my 2004 GXL landcruiser. Instructions are vague to say the least. Found a great link here to the sidewinder driving light harness, which has cleared things up. However does anyone know which wire under the drivers side dash turns the high beam on, so I can splice into it?

Unles they've changed Toyota's switch ground when operating the lights which then brings in a relay to switch the power. (Been afew years since I've done one)
I've always tapped into the wire behind one of the headlights, mounted the driving light relay nearby with a power feed direct from the battery positive for the relay.
You just need one wire run back into the dash for the switch that controls the relay ground which you can pick up inside.
DO NOT take the relay power from the little power box that Toyota fits under the bonnet (do they still have them?) as it will melt with the pwer drain required for adecent set of driving lights.
On another note you may find that by fitting an aftermarket headlight wiring harness that it improves the standard headlights enough unless you do a lot of night driving.

if you have a manual , which you should have , it will tell you the colour and where it runs , if not, then crab a test light ,turn on high beam till you find it , if you still have trouble ,goto the head lights ,get some one to help by flashing on high beam for you ,so you can probe the wire from the back of the lights , when you find the high beam power wire , you will know the colour , should be the same colour all the way back !

you don't need to splice under the dash ! you can splice down near the relay under the bonnet !

hope it helps a little mate ! with a little luck someone will know the colour , and tell ya

Hi LC100

I always connect to the back of the headlight for the pick up. Don't cut into any under dash wiring.

If it is negative switched you will need to pick up both positive and negative from the back of the headlight for the relay. High beam uses the 2 outer pins on the globe.

Send me you email address and I will send you a full size wiring diagram.

Regards

Derek.

Mate!

I found myself in your situation not so long ago and unless you have the Time and Mental Acumen to perserve with Toyota's funny oriental thinking on 'this one' try what a I did and that was:

Went down to the local Auto-lec I have used for years who took a .02 sec of a look and identified the problem as described by the above gentlemen.

I left it there and picked it a few hours later with some extra relays, 'special wire' to the blue high beam light in the dash all for $100.

That night tested the sucker and there was slight hiccup on the hi-lo side of things.

Back next day and they fixed their error and all was sweet.

Have to say it was the best $100 I had spent for a long time and so easy to.

I had skinned a few knuckles and spent hours in the installation to make it 'invisible' (included making mounts for different bits and pieces, conduiting all cables and threading same through body cavities etc), and after all that the 'plug & play' principle I had been promised didn't work.

Works on a Prado but not a cruiser.

Yep! most satisfying spending that $100

Thanks for all your advice, I had a good long look this morning and decided that the pay the auto-spark option is the go. I'll stick to the driving and leave the electrics to the pro's.

Great website by the way, will be back.

Cheers

thats the great thing about this place , there will always be someone with the right thing to do ! all you need to do is too pick which one lol .. all the best with ya job !

As the others have said, pickup from the back of the headlight. You will see that the wires that go to the stalk for high beam activation are very tiny as they only produce small pulses of energy to the relay which then powers the highbeam.

I have IPF800's on my 80 series and the only wire that goes inside the cabin is the mouse switch that comes with the kit.
