G'day folks,

Picking up our new Coromal Pioneer Camper Trailer tomorrow. We will be towing it behind our 2004 Toyota Prado. Does anyone have a similar set up and what sort of additional mirrors do you use. The Camper Trailer will be slighty wider than the Prado so will probably need to use them.

What sort do ppl recommend to use.

Cheers

Ash

We use Aussie Truck Mirrors on 120 series Prado with great success. And no, they don't scratch the paint (I am a fastidious fanatic about that). We used them on our previous 4WD also. You can't use them with drivers or passengers windows fully wound down. Available from most 4WD & caravan places (distributed in S.A.), or phone Dario Caravan Repairs in St Marys S.A.. There is a base clip available at no extra charge for the bottom of the doors on the Prado which has a wider base. If you look at the underside of the front doors of a 120 Prado you will see why a wider based clip which catches onto the door metal is preferable to just catching under the plastic door trim and bending that out. This may also apply to other vehicles, I don't know.

Gidday Ash,

When we had our PS391, I bought a pair of clip-on mirrors prior to delivery (as a precaution). The problem was that every truck that passed blew it and the normal mirror back, bashing into the doorglass. Lucky they didn't break!

In all honesty, you can probably get away without them but best check it out for yourself. The standard mirrors (particularly the left) gave pretty good vision down the sides and had no blind spots for me.

If you decide to get mirrors, don't get the ones that piggyback over the existing mirrors. Get stand alones.

The Coromals are a bit heavy on the hitch for the Prado, so if you don't get a WDH, at least get some Polyair (or similar) airbags. We did the latter and the whole setup handled heaps better. We used about 15psi to level the rig.

Thanks for the advice John. Had to use Polyair bags on a previous Toyota I had (1992 ForeRunner) as the back end on that sagged dramatically when pulling our old camper trailer. Must admit, hadn't thought of that. If l had my way I would probably end up buying every possible accessory......thank goodness for the financial controller (read wife).

Just remember that coil air bags are not a load bearing device.

I got mine from Auto-Pro but I have seen them in many spare parts shops I paid about $180 for a pair but most likely more now that was about two years ago.

Ash

The previous response asked if you had considered using a monitor and rear view camera.

That is not a bad option. You can purchase them through ebay for a reasonable price. They work well and you then do not have the problems of additional mirrors such as causing damage to the vehicle.
Life's great and it just keeps getting better

Thanks every one for your advise. I ended up with 1 x Aussie Truck Mirror and got it for $92 from the dealer. Not going to worry about a left hand side one at this stage.
