What are the road conditions like mid May onwards on the
Gibb River Rd? Still a high chance of being closed due to water? What depth water crossings on average could be expected at the Pentecost at this time of year?
Planning for 2008.
cheers

I went across in May 2006. There are graders working on the
Gibb River Road as soon as the wet ends and it is a
well maintained gravel road.
When I went across the Pentecost it was a very easy crossing.
I cannot predict what it will be like in May 2008. That depends on how much rain they get during the wet. It should not be a problem.
If you are going up to the
Mitchell Plateau the road becomes a little bit rougher but nothing that cannot be easily handled by going slower. I towed my camper trailer in there without any problems.

In the past, Ann from
Drysdale River Station has provided road reports. You could start by looking at their website. It is quite informative.

Thanks all - just wanted to ensure we weren't planning the trip around times when there's a 90% chance of the road being closed.

Listen to the ABC they give you regular road conditions and water depths. We found them to be very informative.

Hi Scubaroo,
As Furph said go read our web site it explains in detail why no one can predict in advance what the road condition will be like at any time or how deep the water will be at that time of the year.
Can't even tell you 2 weeks before hand as a rule so no chance for over a year in advance !
I would just love to know myself as you can guess what it is like trying to get in staff and be ready to open at the correct time to suit trade when there is a 2 month gap beween times early or late we are able to open due to the road.
The difference between graded or not is why there are such varied reports on the road, all depends if the person describing it was lucky to be doing it just after a grade was done or not.
cheers, Anne
