I'm looking at buying a 2002 TF Rodeo with the 3 lt inter cooled turbo diesel engine. I've never heard any bad things about the old 2.8 lt diesels (except the rattling) and the new 3lt In the RA Rodeos seem to be getting a good wrap to, so what is the 3 lt in the last of the TF Rodeos like? Are they the same engine that's in the current RA or are they more like the old Jackaroo 3 lts? Brian, since you own one of these diesels, I'd be very interested to hear your comments on your Rodeo.
Cheers
Steve

They are not the RA 3l motor but a revamped 2.8 with a few more cc's.

Never heard anything bad, they have more power and the intercooler from standard.

My 1st choice but couldnt find one under $30k (testament to the popularity) last year so bought a 99 for $11k and have the intercooler off a Jackaroo to fit soon!

Goodluck,

Matt.

Thanks for the reply matt. So they are a tricked up 2.8. That helps put my mind at ease. I have heard a few bad reports about the 3 lt in the Jackaroos and was hoping that this wasn't the same engine that has been put into the Rodeo.

Incorrect!!

The 3.0L from 2002 is the same as fitted to the 2003-2006 RA. The location of the intercooler is one obvious difference, other than that, it's the same donk.

Cheers,
Dion.

OK, how I'm confused. You may be right Dion, I noticed that the power and torque of the TF 3lt & the RA 3lt are the same. Anyone else got any comments?

Hi Steve. All I can say is I am happy with mine. As it is the first diesel I have had so
I can't compare it with others. It goes all day with no worries. Tows the camper ok
Happy with fuel economy. Hope it helps you some. Brian

Something to watch is the flywheel on these if it is the same as the flywheel in the Jackaroo.

We had an issue with one that was in a workshop and they couldn't get it to start. A call to City Holden in Adelaide had the problem sorted. It was to do with the flywheel also doing the timing, apparently they get calls regularly with this.

Believe it has a (dual mass? or fluid) style flywheel which helps reduce vibration but is expensive to replace. Probably worth getting it checked or something with a service history you can check on.

Something to be aware of if you need to do work on. Also believe the injectors are quite expensive (but most people complain about the cost regardless of make so not sure they are any worse)

Hopefully others more knowledgeable can explain this better!
