Evening

I am looking at buying a new tarp. I am sick of the ones I have now…just the normal silver looking ones that I join but it looks tacky and I need something a bit better. I am looking for something that looks nice is about 5x3 is waterproof and that the sides can roll down.

Can anyone tell me where I can find such an item? I have checked out some of the local camping shops and I have not been able to find anything nice?

Thanks

Try the NT General store in Darwin, these guy are legends in camping gear, if they don't have it or can't tell you were to find it, it simply doesn't exist.
there # is 08 89818242.

Hi Troll 81,
Are you looking for plastic tarps or the real thing (canvas)?

Any good canvas works should be able to make up a good quality plastic tarp. I had a 12'x8' made up for around $180 complete with eyelets.

If you want something much better again, a good canvas works would be able to make up whatever size you want in real "Berkmyre" cotton canvas. Much better than plastic but much more exxy. Again I had a 12'x12' made up in Berkmyre about 20 years ago and even then it was about $200 from memory. Looks a bit grotty now but still in good condition and still waterproof.

IMHO most of the cheaper plastic stuff is not worth buying except for a one off use.

Hope this helps

Cheers

The plastic woven tarp stuff they use on the side of big semi transports is fantastic. I came across some about 10 years ago and had it made into a tarp and it has been pretty well indestructible. Not sure where you would get it now, mine came from a Merlbourne tarp maker, but could be worth following up with transport companies.

Hi Troll

I see your after canvas now , so this isn't much help.

But we went to heavy duty plastic ones from Aussie disposals for interesting
reasons and feel we are much better off now.

This is not just because the plastic is more waterproof under pressure or reflects heat.

This issues were that we make lots of things out of them and it has proved to be a source of cheap and very workable material even though it doesn't last as long.

For example the whole rear of my patrol is lined with one. Basic 8X10 tarp
was $14 , it was so easy to cut out special shape with scissors and very easy to machine seams with ordinary equipment.

Often we attach bits together and here we use sticky back Velcro and again seam the edges.

The ability to achieve a practical low cost result was what won us over

Troll

Have a look on Ebay.

I got a beauty - a bit bigger than what yer after 20' x 24' for $69. It had the heavy sewn in stainless tags and a double sewn roped edge all around.

It has survived some big winds on camps.

Sorry Troll I re-read your post and missed the bit about silver tarps.

On Ebay I typed in "tarp" in the search field.

The one I described I have is a silver top with green underside, it is a heavy poly type marerial.

Good Luck
Vinnie
