Martijn, not quite sure what you are after.
I know my son with his 3G phone can get his phone to pinpoint where he is, roughly, to within a 100 metres or so.
But that will only work in the area of coverage.
A lot of out back Oz is not covered by phone.

see www.fonezone.com.au/?p=2074

Unless your phone is also a PDA, in which case you could run oziexplorer CE or something similar.

see Site Link

It can be bought through Exploroz.

Oziexplorer has a laptop and PDA (known as CE) versions.

also see www.oziexplorer.com/

I know Oziexplorer is sold in Europe so you could have a look at it and become familiar with it with local maps before coming to Oz.

The maps are extra to Oziexplorer.

There is also other similar software available.

Hi Martijn

The answer to your question is no I don't know of any and even if they exist I would not be comfortable heading deep bush with just that for navigation. You _must_ have paper maps, compass and, ideally, a GPS too _and_ understand how to use them all.

Also keep in mind that something like 95%? of the _land_ area of Australia is not covered by mobile phone. HF radio or satellite phone are the only options for most outback travel.

This forum is an excellent resource for overseas tourists intending to "go bush" in Oz so hang in there and ask lots of questions - and enjoy our country when you come here :)

Mike is right with the post above Martin. Your watch should be one with sweep hands too though so you can tell which is North when the sun is out.

It would be better than a phone unless.....
You could go for a phone/PDA combination so it can work with a Bluetooth GPS and get some good maps

Mobile phones and anything to do with Internet ...does not work more than a hundred kilometres from main towns on the east coast of Australia...

DON"T PLAN ON USING MOBILE PHONES IF YOU WISH TO TRAVEL IN THE OUTBACK....they don't work ...and remember ....

THEY DO NOT WORK !!!!!! ANYWHERE

AND SATELLITE PHONES DO NOT ALWAYS WORK EITHER !!!!!!!

Get a good map and if you need communications ...get an HF radio ...buy or hire one ...they are what you really must have in the outback if you need communications with services ....(Australia is a vast country ...most Nederlanders would not be able to concieve the size of this continent )

What did you not understand......MOBILE PHONES ARE USELESS IN THE OUTBACK IN AUSTRALIA...

Blue Tooth ...and all that bull bleep does not work out there ...

GET REAL.....WAKE UP .....

If you are so sure that your bleep useless phone is any good ...why don't you call up the maker and ask them.....and don't answer back that they said it would work ...that's what they all say !!!

Steve, I'm sure Martijn is aware that his mobile phone will not work in outback Oz (as far as making and receiving calls go), however his mobile phone is obviously also a PDA with bluetooth capability which may be able to run OziExplorer or equivalent mapping software.

Bluetooth will work anywhere - it is nothing more than a wireless communication method. In this case, it is used to talk wirelessly between his mobile phone / PDA and his GPS Receiver. This is completely unrelated to whether the mobile phone is in range of any mobile network or not.

I think this forum is a great way for people to gain information as Martijn has attempted to do. It would be a real shame to turn people away from this site by being a little over enthusiastic with replies to valid questions.

Martijn, as with Oldplodder's comments above, I would also recommend the use of OziExplorer software with either the 1:250,000 Raster Maps of Australia or Hema Maps. Enjoy your trip.

Regards,
Gavin

Thanks Gavin.
I think that Steve got a problem. I'm not sure what it is.
Anyway you understood my question. I hope that the OziExplorer software works on mobile phones. Otherwise i have to buy a PDA or a portable navigation system.

Any thanks for all your replies. Especially steve.;-)

Martijn
