Hi all,

Could somebody please tell me what is involved in a 140k service for a 4.2L GU wagon? I have been getting different quotes ranging from $120 up to $500. Nearly every mechanic I talk to tells me different things that are involved in this service. Some say standard oil and filter change only, some say oil and filters with valve clearances checked, some say all of this plus remove hubs for bearing work, etc, etc.

I have only recently bought the vehicle which has been logbook stamped every 5,000km since new. This is the first service i will be giving it. So if someone out there knows what Nissan's requirements for a 140k service, that would help me decide which mechanic is giving me the right advice. Thanks in advance.

Service book only goes up to 90k. That's why I'm seeking advice from broader community.

the book would normally give details on what needs doing how often.

Most mechanics would have computer system that would have recommendations based on that.

Ask for a list, work out what really needs doing and revise the list of what is done to capture your needs.

If you're going bush you might have different needs to pottering around town.

Isn't it just a monor service? Every 40k is the major service with wheel bearings tappets etc.

Just go back to the book and look at the 40,000 service, it will be the same.

When you decide to go with someone just give the book to them and say as for the 40,000.

Not too many service centres would do the tappets. I've been told by repuatable sources that they never get done. No noise- no service.

They should do the tappets. No noise could mean that the clearances are too small and valves are staying open = Loss of power and burnt exhaust valves. Over time the clearances do close up due to valve recession, it is normal engine wear.

Yes they should.

Mark the rocker cover bolts or something next time your tappet clearances are due and see what happens. I'll bet the tappets never get checked. I know several service places that don't do them.

Hi Plasnart,
If, as you say, you've just bought the vehicle and the log book only goes to 90k service, what gaurantee have you that the services from 90km to 140km have been carried out. Probably have, but can you be sure?

If it was mine I would be doing everything listed in the biggest service shown in the logbook, (all oils, Bearings etc). That way YOU will know that everything has been serviced at the start of your ownership and you can continue with services as required.

Good luck with your new vehicle

Just to clarify some points:
- Service log book has been stamped every 5000km.
- I have previous owner's receipts for every service carried out on this vehicle, so I know what, when and how much for everything that has been done to vehicle since new.
- Owners handbook only shows required servicing up to 90,000km, that's why I'm asking if anybody knows what is involved in a 140k service.

Plasnart, have you rang the previous mechanic and asked him, I'm sure he would have had to know what is required and how much, and then go from there.
