Has any body tried a layer of that egg carton shaped foam on top of a inner spring mattress to soften it ? I noticed it in CK. rubber in green & yellow colours, green being the thicker one. I wandering how hot it might get in summer? crocket

I have a piece of the high density stuff on the top of our mattress, makes things marginally more cumfortable but in hotter weather we have noticed that we stay cooler, must let air curculate I guess...

We used the soft stuff on a rock hard mattress in our old van with great success and sleep. We also had a good quality mattress protector on top of the foam to "insulate" it. No problems even on warmest nights. PS we put the knobly bits UP.

Do whatever it takes to make the bed in the camper super comfy. Otherwise you may as well use a tent.

Good stuff crocket. When we bought out caravan, previous owner gave us her 'eggshell' mattress overlay as it was QS and too big for their home bed. It is very comfortable and keeps us cool. My husband finds his bad back much better when sleeping in the caravan than at home (i keep telling him we should be out on the road).

Gidday Crocket. The foam shouldn't get hotter than the innerspring if it's open celled foam. Foam is colour coded according to it's density (hardness or resilience). Brown is usually the firmest, followed by green, yellow, white, purple, blue, and another white.

Yellow is pretty firm, but with the egg carton pattern it should reduce pressure points (which make it uncomfortable). It's a good compromise. I think green is a bit firm, even if it's under the yellow. Personally, I wouldn't bother with the green.

Just put a mattress protector over it and it'll be fine.

Yes, top marks from us also on the eggshell. We have a high density foamie, then the eggshell, then the lambs wool underlay. Hot or cold climates it is extremely comfy.

I did not know the significance of the diff colours. I came across it at an old folks home, they recomend it for the oldies to avoid sores from pressure points. My mother swears by it for comfort (yellow).

You should try Tempur overlays. It's an open celled foam and it's also temperature sensitive so it actually moulds to your shape and stays firm in other areas with less pressure. I think they also do seat cushions and stuff. www.tempur.com.au
A friend got a mattress from them made to his exact size that he wanted for his caravan after buying one from home and loving it.

Brown used to be the highest density in polyurethanes (F80), Green = F70, Yellow = F60, White = F50 and so on.

F80 was almost like solid rubber (very few cells). I used to make the stuff a loooong time ago. (One of the most health threatening occupations known to man!) We made very little F80 as very few companies had any use for it.

I can't remember how the numbers worked......

crocket, I have slept a few nights on it. Yes, I agree with the others on comfort but believe it inhibits movement like rolling over in bed. I guess it has be be considered along with the doonah or whatever as to wether you get too hot. They can't be considered in isolation I believe.

You can get them from Pillow Talk in Queensland. Brought one last xmas because the new high density matress was too hard to sleep on. Only problem was having to pull off the bed before folding the Jayco dove up as it would have been too thick for the roof to come down. Ok for us as we usally only use the Jayco when sitting in the one spot on xmas holidays and use the camper for other trips during the year.
Cheers

Yes good choice,we have one on our bed at home, in the camper, and the swag with a lambswool magnetic overlay on top.
Dont care how bulky it is, you need to be comfortable to enjoy being away.

Cheers pesty

We have just gone from a High density foam Q/S with an "eggshell" in the camper to a 10cm self inflating.......we found it so much better we didnt need the eggshell so we have placed the old eggshell upside down under the new mattress to hopefully allow more air to circulate under the mattress.

Cheers

We put a yellow egshell one (Dunlop Brand from memory) on a very dead innerspring mattress and it was a massive improvement. I would liken it to sleeping on a normal innerspring as opposed to a pillow-top innerspring.

Definately get it - the bed only gets comfyer! ;-)

Cheers

Crocket,
Yellow egg shell foam was used in hospitals extensively in an attempt to decrease the occurance of pressure sores. Put the pointy bits up. It certainly improves the comfort level. One of the claims was that more air circulated, so skin stayed drier and deceased the occurance of the skin breaking down.
