search is your friend. I think there may be 1 or 2 other reported problems in the past.

Small Claims or whatever it is called in your State.
$32 vs $5500.
Have a go.

Hi
How many
miles did you get out of it ??
I have heard there is a Perkins adaptor plate geting arond now the Perkins is a far more reliable motor something you may wish to consider.
Regards Jon
Any pics of blown motor you would be best to get some pics up on the Net that may fire nissan up to shut you up ............... It would be best to do this sooner than later before everyone doe's it.

My neighbours 2000 Patrol had the same problem. Had done just over 100,000km. It took him about 6 weeks dealing with Nissan head quarter, was just about to get involved with a Currant Affair program, a letter from a solicitor...and then Nissan finally agreed to replace the motor with a currant one. He just paid for labour cost.
But I remember it was a long and slow process. First they agreed to fix the problem pretty quickly, but he wouldn't settle for that. He wanted a new motor.
Be patient and good luck
Josef

I'd be pushing Nissan for a new motor. The problem is
well documented in some of the posts on this site as
well as other forums - search is your friend. When armed with all the relevant posts I'd be calling Melb head office and talking to customer relations and pointing out that you issue is not an isolated problem.
Out of curiosity, who diagnosed the prob?
I wonder how long Nissan can go on replacing engines as these vehicles are getting on to 6 years old now but I feel it's a matter of principle, regardless of age, that they should replace any engine that suffers from this common failure.

Im personally pretty disappointed for owners who have to go through all this stress.
Imagine being retirement age like most of them seem to be, buying your 'dream' car, probably the last one your planning on buying before dying for your once in a life time lap of the map, towing your mobile roadblock, and then going through this. Im waitin for someone to have a heartattack and die when told to bleep off and fix it yourself, then see what sort of press and reaction they get.
Nissan should have done the right thing by everyone both ways, recall, and bleep ed off the grenade from the range.

I completely agree and feel for anyone going through this issue. It was bad enough when I had my gearbox problems and this took 2 months to rectify with serveral visits to the dealer and weeks with out my truck. After sending faxes and jumping up and down I finally recieved replacement gearbox. You shouldn't need to hammer a company to get your warranty work done. Nissan need to look up the words 'customer service'. It's not the guys at the dealers it's head office where they say yes and no to claims.
I will probably never buy another new Nissan because of thier customer service.

"You shouldn't need to hammer a company to get your warranty work done"
Bingo.
"I will probably never buy another new Nissan because of thier customer service"
I even hear this from members in the Nissan Club, apart from the reliability issues, theres the distinct lack of appearing to be keeping up with the opposition...

It's going to be a hard choice soon,
3.0lt 4 cylinder T/D datsun patrol that get about 9lt/100km with a history ofBIG problems when using this engine
OR
4.5lt V8 T/D Toy motor Land Bruiser that gets about 9lt/100km.
This engine is unknown in Aust. But O/S has proven to be very reliable.

Yes thats exactly what happened to us , we ploughed all our super and savings into our Patrol {$40,000} only to find this out I think you can imagine how we felt, as for Nissan paying labour or parts so they damn
well should to think the customer should be paying anything is ludicrous, this is and always has been a common fault with that year/model, no other car in its class has been dogged with as many problems as this one, in spite of what people like Truckster say it's only NISSAN'S 3Ltr thats causing all this pain, the Paj, Toyo, Landy all have 3lt engines and few have as many issues as the Patrol, but he is right about one thing Nissans refusal to do the right thing has made sure THIS mug will never be caught by them again,
just wonder when it will all end and to what cost Nissan, meantime, on it goes, .................

Rob. A good friend had his blow up at 70000km. Late mod. 2002 and a few months out of warranty. Had very poor response from the dealer and through this
forum found the name of the person (female) in Nissan Melb. HO to speak to. The final result was a rebuilt engine (which possibly many were with only piston damage) at a cost to him of $2700 for installation etc.
The whole excersize took nearly 12 weeks.

The Lady in
Melbourne, if you search comes up Val Davis. There is a ph # and Email :)
The engine is now down to $6k I think as its a high replacement item.

Well, some news today. Nissan have made us an offer to pay for an engine rebuild kit and any associated parts but not the labour. Curiously after talking to the dealer the labour has now increased $1K to a min $3k. They tell me that this may not cover everything as they are yet to pull the engine out of the vehicle and find the true extent of the problem. We will push on with this.

Brunswick diesel in WA do a 6.5 Chevvy conversion compete with diff ratios for just over 20k. (plus trade in for old motor) Just waitng for my 2002 3L GU to melt those pistons again. The cost of trading in car plus accessorising a new one would be at least 10-20grand, so a 6.5 v8 is seriously worth considering.
