For the people that have roof racks do they make much noise while travelling or do you need a deflector for the wind. I am looking at running some rails around my top and maybe a solar panel over the roof of the ute (driver passenger area).

But have heard they make a lot of noise.

Any help most welcome.

Thanks
Brian

Brian,
I have had a number of different roof racks over the years even though I try to not need them. Bought and home built. My impression is that the worst noise is caused by open grooves and ends of channels. Use rubber strip or gaffer tape to close them off and they will be much better. Deflectors may work but I have got by without them.

Hi Brian

I've travelled thousands of kms with Rhino bars and an attached 'basket' both fully loaded with gear and empty - never heard a thing. I occasionally travel with a stormwater pipe water carrier arouind perimeter of the basket too - again, not a sound in the cabin.

Happy days

Whats the go with the 100mm PVC pipe often seen attached to roofracks?? And why around the perimeter of your rack??' If it's for water- gee even 2m of 100mm pipe must hold about 15 litres?? I'd rather have a 20l jerrycan stowed down lower inside the vehicle !!

my pipework holds (I think-it goes round 3 sides of the 'basket') just on 20litres and yes I'd rather have it lower down for center of gravity reasons but it's just not practical in my rig. It's really easy to use it for a shower because it's at head height and it's warm/hot at the end of the day - it's obviously solar heated as you travel. I just slip a piece of plastic tube with a shower head onto the tap outlet that I've connected to the pipework and voila! instant shower!

We never use it for drinking without boiling because the water can be even 'suspect' although I always try to fill it with potable water - it's always kept separate from our 2X20 litre normal drinking water 'cubes' in the cabin.

Happy days

Yes, they do make a noise.
I find it depends how far forward on the roof it is.

If you place the front of it out of the slipstream coming up the windscreen, it reduces the nose, ad imporves fuel consumption.

Oldplodder is spot on about the importance of positioning to both noise and fuel economy. When we added a deflector to our full length rack on a toyo 60 series, positioned so it continued the line of wind deflection up the windscreen, noise reduced. I didn't dp tests before adding the deflector but figure that reduced noise probably equates to smoother airflow and therefore less fuel consumption.

I couldn't possibly tell the roof rack noise from all the other stuff going on around me in the 75 series but son has ARB on his 100series and noisy when empty but goes quiet as soon as any old thing is thrown up there - even the mother in law!

I have a 1.8M Rhino tray mounted a bit towards the rear (to avoid windscreen airflow a bit). It is on three ROLA racks. No noise noticed. I also use a custom fitted sack to keep everything clean on top.

The rack you can see in my rig pic below sings a little when empty, but but the time the sewing machine motor in the paj is at highway speed most of the wind noise is drowned out.
